Tossed the disc in w/o looking too closely (it said Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol right on the disc, good enough for me!). Anyway, the disc starts up and goes through the typical menus, and right into the movie. I am sitting there in the opening 5 minutes thinking: "OMG, this looks like crap. Nothing like what I say in theaters! Digital noise and the PQ was soft. WTF?" I then look at my reciever expecting to see the Dolby Tru HD 7.1 logo but I see Dolby Digital 5.1 instead. At that point I think to myself "Wait a sec...." and grab the MI4 case....

So, long story short, on my copy of MI4 the blu ray is on the left hand side under the insert that comes with the movie and the dvd is on the right. So, there is a good chance, that if you bought this you did the same thing I did. Check your cases kids, and look under the insert, its possible you grabbed the dvd instead of the blu ray. Of course, I wouldn't know anyone silly enough to do that....nope...not at all....
I haven't done that before but I DO pay close attention to what disc I'm putting in. Every time I open the case to a 2-3 disc set I look closely at the discs and search for the "Blu-Ray" logo/symbol.

If it weren't for the possibility of your set-up not being calibrated properly I would think you were trolling saying that.
I was going to type all of that to his response, but was lazy and typed "Pure rubbish." instead.

The picture is quite soft at times because it's not in focus properly.

That's a decision by the cinematographer rather than a failing of the Bluray.

Ive only seen the UK one on rental but thought the PQ (and AQ for that matter!) was near-reference. Not quite the best Ive seen but close. Thats on a 50" plasma.

So after all the positive, I leaning towards it being a defect of the disc. I'll see if I can get a video of what the blacks are doing and then see if any of you notice the same.

Yes, make sure you put in the Blu-ray and not the DVD. When you open the case, the DVD is on the right side and the BD is under the insert on the left. The first thing I did when I noticed that was switch them around in the case.

Something has to be wrong...... because it looks just fine to me. In fact, it looks very good. Perhaps you got a bad disc... I am sure that can happen... but there is nothing wrong with what I am seeing.

It's not silly. It just means I have a different opinion than you.

And FYI: having a different opinion...even one that you personally strongly disagree with, is not "trolling". This is a discussion board. Meaning: people come here to discuss all aspects of various blu ray discs -- the good, the bad and the ugly. And the great thing about that: one will come across a wide variety of opinions, and having an opposing opinion isn't "trolling".

Thanks. Already mentioned that i was watching the blu ray. Also confirmed by the 7.1 option in the audio menu.

Which is fine. I wasn't saying flat out that you ARE trolling but you saying that Ghost Protocol has barely DVD quality PQ is an odd statement and not something you hear often. I can understand people saying its not perfect and has issues but "barely DVD quality" on discs like this is a bold statement, opinion or not.

Unfortunately these days opinions like yours on discs like this are indeed a minority and some are genuine and some simply are not. If you thought I was calling you a troll then I apologize and I DO understand the concept of opinion, trust me...thats just a "out of left field" remark on the PQ of a Blu thats been received by most as a reference quality disc.

It's okay though, I'm sure there are people out there that think Avatar has "barely better than DVD" PQ...but it they really believe that then they will be VERY dissapointed with Blu-Ray in general.

No harm done. No need to apologize or anything.

I know a lot of people (probably most in fact), think MI:4 PQ is amazing. Good for them. I just didn't see it.

That's what I do whenever I encounter a case with the DVD on the right and the BD hidden under the insert on the left. Had one or two of these lately with other films.

But in most cases, disc load times is usually a good indication of what disc you're loading. DVDs usually load nearly instantly, while BDs take a bit longer.

Yes, however...

You can't really have an opinion on something provable. If the actual picture quality is graded, and proven to be sharper and more detailed than a DVD, then no amount of "opinion" can change the fact that it looks much better.

LOL same thing happened to me with The Incredibles. The Mrs put it in & throughout the movie I was thinking, "this looks bad, real bad. I took it out half way through & sure enough, it was the DVD & it was where the BD should have been.

But yea MI:GP is great looking on my set

Just checked it on two more tv's. It is definitely a problem with the transfer. The best part to notice it is at the end when Ethan and the other agent are talking at the table. When the other agent, can't remember his name lol, stands up and it just shows him and a total black background. Best way to describe it is the blacks blotch in certain area's. It's very easy to see if your in a completely dark room. See if anyone else can duplicate it. Never noticed this with any other blu ray's I've watched.

The blocking and artifacts you describe have been discussed in the original thread. More than one person has had problems with them but the vast majority are not able to duplicate the issues.

MI4 looks outstanding on my 70" JVC LCoS set, and on both of my projectors. No artifacts or blocking whatsoever. I posted photos of my screen in the other thread to prove it.

At this point, either some of you got defective discs or you simply have equipment that is causing issues. It is NOT a widespread problem. Quite the opposite.

Yeah, this was discussed extensively in the other thread. Several people (myself included) had serious picture issues with the 3 disc Best Buy exclusive. Some people didn't see them on their set ups (which is good) but the problem is definitely the disc (all of them). I've been tempted to pick up the non-exclusive 2 disc to compare, but life and work have caused a delay.

Wow, and I thought I was the only one!!! I agree with you 100%. Just like you said, especially toward the end of the movie, the PQ drops drastically and is definitely not reference quality.

I watched it about 2 - 3 weeks ago with some friends and I was really disappointed. The PQ was definitely not 5/5. Some scenes look nice, the beginning looks nice but the ending was terrible. At times, the image looked like a DVD. And before anyone says anything, it was the BD that was in the player (or else True HD 7.1 wouldn't show up on the receiver).
Adopted Blu-ray long before its development and launch.
