Default Cabaret 1972 Restoration Blu-ray Feb 5 2013

Cabaret Blu-ray

Cabaret Blu-ray review

Much was written about the "Cabaret" restoration this year and it opened the TCM festival in the Spring. Is this coming to Blu-ray? Someone wrote one of the reels had damage that still needed repair. The restoration was supposed to air on TCM next month. Has this been postponed?

I second the question. Is it coming to blu-ray? I assumed we'd see a 40th anniversary edition by the end of the year, but that seems unlikely now.

I've read on other web sites that there is a scratch on one of the last reels that lasts about 10 minutes ( when Brian is beaten up ) and they have tried different ways to fix it and nothing was working so they did it frame by frame by hand(?) So, yes it should be coming out, but no, not this year! At least when we do get it, it will look ( and sound ) fantastic! And that's what we blu's want most!

Hoping for a nice digibook at least! At most, I would love to see a special feature about the changes from musical to movie, as well as maybe an overview of the musical in its different incarnations (original production and 1998 revival).

Wasn't it screened earlier this year at the TCM film destival? I thought the restoration was already complete.

I heard ages ago that Cabaret was in bad shape. If we are down to the last 10mins it must be close to a release. Glad to hear a lot of TLC is being applied to the blu-ray transfer. Should be worth the wait.

Digibook? Hell, yeah. Go for it! A movie like this needs the respect it deserves.

If true, that's about 14,400 frames of manual correction. Ouch.

Yes, The Huff Post article says that all 1.4 million damaged frames were hand painted by an operator! I knew I remembered reading that number! But maybe they ment the entire movie? But still, hand painted? Oh well, maybe we will know more when it is released on blu. I remember seeing it several times at the movies in 1972 (when I wasn't watching "The Poseidon Adventure"!)

Was really hoping this would be announced for 2012 release on BLU but I would imagine WB will announce it for their 100th Anniversary for 2013 I hope.
Stop the Replacing of original Studio Opening / Closing logos! These are becoming endangered and should be kept intact. They are part of film history.

CABARET 40TH ANNIVERSARY

BLU-RAY™ BOOK & DVD

Remastered with New and Vintage Special Features

FEBRUARY 5 FROM WARNER HOME VIDEO

Burbank, Calif., October 8, 2012 – Cabaret, Bob Fosse’s ground-breaking Oscar®-winning musical drama starring Liza Minnelli (Arthur, The Sterile Cuckoo), Michael York (the Austin Powers films), Joel Grey (TV’s “Oz”), Helmut Griem, and Marisa Berenson (I am Love), celebrates its 40th anniversary with a Blu-ray debut on February 5, 2013. Remastered for the first time in over 20 years, Cabaret is presented in its original aspect ratio (16 x 9 format). Winner of eight Academy Awards®, including Director (Fosse), Actress (Minnelli), and Supporting Actor (Grey), the film will be offered in a premium Blu-ray Book format ($27.98 SRP), which contains 40 pages of insightful photos and text. A new documentary, "Cabaret: The Musical That Changed Musicals" will be featured, along with vintage documentaries "Cabaret: A Legend in the Making," "The Recreation of an Era," a multi-part memory gallery and more. A DVD version will also be available ($14.97 SRP).

Cabaret was adapted from the Tony® -winning stage production, which was in turn inspired by Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories and the play and movie I Am a Camera. This remarkable musical turns the pre-war Berlin of 1931 into a sexually charged center of decadence. Liza Minnelli gives a bravura performance as nightclub entertainer Sally Bowles, and Joel Grey is the master of ceremonies at the nightclub, also acting as the storyteller for the audience, exposing the seediness of the cabaret world. The superb songwriting team of Kander and Ebb contributes a string of memorable songs that not only entertain but also provide social commentary on the events of the time. Under the helm of director-choreographer Bob Fosse (All that Jazz), Cabaret becomes both a devastating drama and top-rate entertainment, and the result is one of the most memorable and meaningful screen musicals ever made.

In 1995, Cabaret was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

In 2006, Cabaret ranked #5 on the American Film Institute's list of best musicals.

Synopsis:

Flamboyant and eccentric American entertainer Sally Bowles (Minnelli) sings in Berlin’s decadent Kit Kat Club, even as Nazism rises in Germany in 1931. She falls in love with a British language teacher (York) – whom she shares with a homosexual German baron (Griem). But Sally's insular, carefree, tolerant and fragile cabaret world is about to be crushed under the boot of the Nazis as Berlin becomes a trap from which Sally's German friends will not escape.

I hope Warner Bros isn't greedy and makes us buy the huge sets to get these releases... they better all be available individually!

This will be a day-one purchase (if individually packaged)! I'd love to see it in a nice digibook.
