I'd heard it was Dec. 21, which makes it much, much more likely that Disney suddenly looked around and realized:
"Hey, wait a minute! Where's Fox? There's supposed to be an Alvin sequel here, in the Christmas Day slot! Or at least some Jack Black or Warner thing...There isn't? WOOHOO!!--We did it, we did it! We finally got one all to ourselves! Bring on the parents, and bring the vacation cash! ")

(That was originally the plan with Princess & the Frog, but unfortunately, there was an Alvin sequel standing there that year and wouldn't budge, so Disney had to slink back to the second week in December, and we all know what happens there.
A re-release title is still better than nothing at all, and Disney has learned by now that you don't sell Beauty&Beast 3D to kids, you sell Lion King 3D in theaters to parents, on a vacation week when the parents can take them, and BEFORE the disk comes out.)
