USA Grave of the Fireflies (2012?)

Grave of the Fireflies Blu-ray Review

The Ghibli Blog and ToonZone.net reported today that Sentai Filmworks has acquired the rights to release Studio Ghibli's 1988 film Grave of the Fireflies on Blu-ray in North America!

Release date: 11/20/12

Sentai Filmworks previously acquired the DVD rights to the film and released a new DVD edition (shown above) on 3/6/12. The previous DVD edition by Central Park Media had long been out of print in North America.

I'll keep an eye out for new information and update this thread as soon as I hear anything else!

Great news. Please do keep us updated. I'd pretty much decided to pop for the UK release.

Raise The Red Lantern (1991, Zhang), The Best of Youth (2003, Giordana), Still Life (2006, Jia), 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007, Mungiu)

Avatar = Stalker (1979, Tarkovskiy)

I haven't seen this film but several members have said it is the saddest film they have ever seen. I've put it on my rental list, but how often would one want to watch a film about starving wartime orphans? I'm sure it's brilliant, but I'm rather dreading watching it!
Blu-ray wish list: Blow-Up, Death in Venice, Far from the Madding Crowd, Maurice, Radio On and Ryan’s Daughter.

I know, but I think you should. The movie is excellent, but watch it with a dish rag next to you. I sent a copy to my sister and I told her: Listen, it's a great movie but I'm warning you about the ending. Months later, I was talking to her and I said, oh hey, how was that mooo <--that's all I got out when she suddenly spun around, stuck her finger in my face and said: Don't you EVER do that to me again! I replied, but it was an excellent movie! She said, yes it was, but that ending ripped me to shreds.

I will watch it again (in HD! thanks, Mifune) and cry beautiful, HD tears upon my dish rag.

You'll be in tears at the end, but Grave of the Fireflies is a must-see. If there is one movie that demonstrates how powerful movies can be, this is it.

Whichever comes first, the UK Region B locked release or the US release, gets my money.

I hope they don't rush it out for an arbitrary date later this year. They should take all the time they need on this masterpiece and release the definitive home video release.

Rumors are pointing to November, but I don't think anything has been confirmed yet.

That is wonderful to hear that this is coming out in HD. It's surprising that a children's film was so politically incorrect and unfiltired even at it's time.

I don't think this movie was made and marketed as a children's film in Japan or the states.

I agree. Not something I would show a child that couldn't handle some pretty strong themes, and a couple startling images.

Just because it's animation doesn't make it a kids' movie.

Which is probably why Disney USA never wanted any part of this movie. Even Princess Mononoke was very iffy with them.

I watched this film once and that was enough for me. It's an incredible movie but I have no desire to put myself through that emotional wringer again.

I'm excited to finally watch Grave of the Fireflies, but I'm not excited to have my heart torn open like I've been warned about. Either way, this will be a day one purchase for me.
