Actually, due to the film's subject matter, and it being made by the same studio that did My Neighbor Totoro, they release the film with Totoro as a double feature in order to find an audience for the film. It didn't worked, although Totoro became one of Studio Ghibli's most iconic films, and Totoro wasn't much of a fantasy film. Grave of the Fireflies was however, something that couldn't have been marketed for children by itself, for it's political incorrectness alone.

Releases

The film's initial theatrical release in Japan was accompanied by Hayao Miyazaki's much more lighthearted My Neighbor Totoro as a double feature. In commercial terms, the theatrical release was a failure.[citation needed] While the two films were marketed toward children and their parents, the rather stark nature of Grave of the Fireflies turned away most audiences. However, Totoro merchandise, particularly the stuffed animals of Totoro and Catbus, sold extremely well after the film and made overall profits for the company to the extent that it stabilized subsequent productions of Studio Ghibli.

This movie is wonderful but it's very difficult to watch, I don't know if I can handle another viewing. Anyway I will pre-order and see in which mood I'm in November.

One question: Will it come with Japanese lossless audio?

Sentai already remastered this in HD when preparing for their DVD release back in March. They were just waiting until the Japanese Blu-ray was released before they could produce their own Blu-ray.

If you're talking about special features, though, I suspect you (and I) will be disappointed. The DVD included hardly any.

Regardless, I'm all over this. I only saw it once, years ago, so I'm looking forward to revisiting it in all its glory. Too bad my wife refuses to watch with me. Ah well - her loss!

Wow, I totally missed that, and there it is! I'm curious to find out what the new English dub will be like, especially since I've only ever seen the film twice and the previous dub isn't really burned into my memory. I don't know about everyone else, but I hope Setsuko gets a more "realistic" voice, as I found her voice to be kind of obnoxious in the old Englush dub.

UPDATE: According to Wikipedia, the new dub is being produced by Seraphim Digital.
