United Kingdom A Simple Life

A Simple Life Blu-ray PRE-ORDER

British distributors Arrow Films, in conjunction with Spirit Entertainment, will release on Blu-ray director Ann Hui's A Simple Life (2011), starring Andy Lau, Deannie Yip and Lawrence Ah Mon. The release will be available for purchase online and in shops across the United Kingdom on November 19th.

In 2011, A Simple Life won Best Actress Award (Deannie Yip) at the Venice Film Festival. The film was also Hong Kong's official submission to the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 84th Academy Awards (2012).

Ann Hui directs this Hong Kong drama starring Andy Lau and Deannie Yip about an elderly housekeeper and the employer who comes to look after her. Ah Tao (Yip) has served movie producer Roger (Lau)'s family for generations. When Ah Tao has a stroke Roger, who is now the only member of his family left in Hong Kong, helps her achieve her wish off leaving her job and finding a place in a nursing home. Roger continues to look out for her and their relationship grows even stronger.

Saw this film today. I found it a decent if rather Readers' Digest-y experience in that things never get really unpleasant for the Ah Tao woman at any point, and pretty much around her everyone is nice. Oh well, the film was based on a true story so who am I to want more troubles for her? I should probably catch Amour for a different look at the problems of old age / disability.

Picture quality was quite good, although I felt that the digital camera footage has some blinding white in the daytime sequences.

Wow, this is what the actress that played Ah Tao looks like in life?

I saw Amour and A Simple life within a few days of each other.

Whilst A Simple Life is very rewarding and I strongly recommend it I do prefer Amour.

I still haven't watched this, but I can confirm Amour is near-perfect (and might even be Haneke's masterpiece, though I haven't seen all of his films yet).
