Patton debuts in high definition with an image quality that's simply stunning, far superior to any and all expectations I had for the transfer. The film's 1080p, 2:20:1 framed imagery looks like it was filmed yesterday. The movie screams to be witnessed on a large screen, and I felt my 65" television didn't do the scope of the movie justice. This Blu-ray disc is simply a revelation, and any and all fans of Patton are going to be ecstatic. The transfer is crisp, absolutely pristine, beautiful, and features exquisite detail, this Blu-ray edition far surpasing the quality of the two-disc DVD version of the film I own that came out in late 1999. It's not even close, really, the difference night and day, the DVD appearing soft, far less vibrant, and showcasing painfully less detail than is evident on this incredible Blu-ray disc. The Blu-ray is virtually free of any and all print blemishes, scratches, and pops that are clearly evident over the entirety of the DVD image, although a few stray hairs and nicks do creep up every now and then. Look at the image of a dead body with two scorpions walking on it just after the beginning credits are through rolling. Every single rock and grain of sand are seen individually, the detail so high that the viewer is put right in the middle of this war-ravaged area. I also noticed small nuances to the scene I had never seen before, the post-battle carnage a bit more gruesome than I remembered. The film's opening is glorious, the detail so fine on Patton's jacket and the medals thereon so vivid that you can almost reach through the screen and touch them. From first frame to last, the image is incredibly bright and clean, always sharp and radiant with excellent color reproduction and very little softness. Blacks are true and deep, and flesh tones rate as impeccably perfect. This film has barely aged a day in nearly 40 years (at least on this version), and while Patton doesn't look like I, Robot, this disc merits a top rating nevertheless, this 1970 film looking far superior to most discs on the market, 38 year old catalogue title or not.

I picked up Patton for like $5. So I will just get back what I can for it, then pick up the new release when I feel it's at an appropriate price (i.e. depending on just how big of an upgrade it is, whether it comes with new features, etc).

I used to take a hard-line on not double dipping. But I feel like when I'm picking up blu-rays for peanuts it's not as big of a deal. Just recently picked up the 30th Anniversary Raging Bull for $4.99 (just for the extras) and was able to sell my original version for almost the same. Since I know I paid nothing for Patton I will probably just go ahead and sell it and just plan on picking up the new version in the future.

Hopefully Warner redo's some of their 70mm output (Battle of the Bulge). That one even had lossy audio!!!!

+1. I love this movie. I watched the DVD a couple of years and I realized if I tell my wife I'm going to watch Patton she leaves the house for 3 hours. It's great!

To be fair, that review was written four-and-a-half years ago. Quite frankly, we just didn't know then what we know now. I thought it was jaw-droppingly good at the time, but now that we fans of the format understand more about the mastering process all these years later, I know better.

Answer this truthfully - if no one told you you were supposed to be disappointed with the original release of Patton on blu, what would your HONEST opinion of it be?

I feel like a lot of you guys don't want to like things, even though your eyes tell you they're fine, just because you've been programmed to agree with those screenshot-junkies who nitpick and find faults with transfers (valid complaints or not).

And I'm wholly convinced 99% of you don't really know what DNR is, but have no problem tossing out the term with wild abandon, even if the disc had none of it applied during mastering.

So many of you LOVED the Patton transfer when you saw it, but then quickly changed your tune when you found out that your opinion was somehow wrong.

I saw the Patton blu-ray when it first came out. Looked fine to me then, looks fine to me now. And I'm not afraid to stand by what my eyes tell me, not what some A/V nuts demand that I believe.

I thought Patton looked pretty darn good the first time. I too, won't be double dipping on this one. I'll watch it maybe once a year.
