Default The Abyss

I bought this movie (The Abyss) on DVD the other day. I planned to watch this movie 2 days ago, but I hate screen (Extended Edition). The movie is shown in a ''square'' in the middle of the screen. You see black bars surrounding the motion picture.

I don't like to watch a movie like this because you can't see everything.

Have I bought a shitty DVD transfer or is this movie supposed to be watched like this?

Wow, we have to wait a long time.
Well, I stopped the movie after 10 minutes, I can't watch a movie like that.

I think technically speaking the DVD is presented in open matte since it was shot on super 35 film. In other words, you get more top to bottom instead of less side to side than the theatrical presentation. A small bit of the sides may be cropped but it is not a typical scan and pan transfer. (1.37 to 1.33)

I don't know. I have a PS3.

But I can make the screen larger via the TV remote controller ( not the blu-ray player).

I will make a paint wait a moment please.

There is an option for zoom from the PS3 if you press triangle and the double rectangles icon on the row of available functions on the display overlay. You can also enable DVD upscaling to make the square full 720p/1080i/p instead of also having black bars at the top and bottom of your screen without stretching or zooming.

The DVD is in non-anamorphic widescreen. If you zoom in on the picture with the TV remote, this should solve your problem. I don't understand why this film never got an anamorphic release, but sooner or later we will have a blu and can just forget this travesty...

If I remember right...

On the PS3, while the movie is playing, push the and select the AV settings (the little square with something that looks like levers on it). Set the video upscaling from whatever it's set on to "off." It will cause all non-anamorphic widescreen videos to fill up the screen this way. Problem is, it'll still look like crap with very low definition, and you will have to set the upscaling back on when you want to watch any other anamorphic feature. But, you don't have to watch it in a stupid little box.

EDIT:
Tested it on my copy just to be sure. If you set it to "Full," it will fill up the screen and upscale, but it'll look a little squished. The other settings ("Normal" and "Double Scale") causes it to shrink into a little window in the middle of the screen, which sucks. I think turning the upscaling off is the best possible solution.

It's always a treat when they give you an anamorphic widescreen menu for a letter boxed non-anamorphic movie.

Out of curiosity what was the timecode of the shot you posted blurayisnice? I couldn't find the scene on my DVD, your's looks like a pan and scan version.

I got the region 6 DVD of The Abyss. Uncut and anamorphic. And, for some weird reason, it came with a free DVD of the theatrical edition of Avatar.
Incidentally, I mention it only in passing. I could always tell the judge it was a matter of confession...

No, I have made a paint. That is not what it exactly looks like lol .
I found the picture on Google and used it for my paint. Just to give you an idea what I was talking about.

But thanks for the suggestions guys. I will try it out in a few hours .

I have this and can vouch that it is indeed anamorphic widescreen. It is only the Special Edition cut. I am the one who added it to our database here.

You could purchase it here at Amazon China. For some reason, it does not seen to be available at YesAsia. i had gotten a copy from eBay, but it does not appear that any copies are available there at present.

[Show spoiler]

As I posted above, it seems you can still purchase it here at Amazon China (I fixed the original link, it must have been the Chinese characters that threw it off). They ship internationally, and the price is very reasonable. It comes out to less than USD 10.00 shipped to my US address.
