Australia The Tea Party: The Reformation Tour - Live in Australia (November 7, 2012)

One week prior to The Tea Party's show at the Hordern Pavilion, Sydney on July 21, 2012 they announced they would be filming the concert for a live Blu-ray/DVD release. There have been some regular updates on the progress via their facebook page and now JB has listed it for release November 7, 2012.

The Tea Party are well known for their great live shows and after a seven year hiatus they re-formed and filmed the Sydney show for their first official concert release.

As a fan it'll be awesome to pick this up. Having seen my first Tea Party show 16 years ago I've been a long time fan and the boys are certainly enjoying being back together. Their last tour to our shores prior to their hiatus was still good but you could tell they were tiring of it. Not so now - their talent, energy and enjoyment are really evident in the shows they're putting on this year.

I lined up nice and early and had the good fortune of getting myself front and centre for the show:

For about 2 and a quarter hours The Tea Party played tracks from almost all of their albums with the exception of Seven Circles. They also threw in a few covers and some segues during their songs (as they often do). If the front of house mix was anything to go by it should be a great sounding Blu-ray.

Something tells me this will be infamous in the States. I've known who the band are for years, and I'll admit that now the political party springs to mind before they do.

Awesome. Captured the show nicely. My copy should be arriving today I expect.

People - if you're a fan make sure you pick this up. Received mine today. In a word: awesome. I've updated the database entry but the short version is it's an excellent Blu-ray release.

1080p unlike a lot of other concerts, DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio, a BD-50 with 38GB devoted to the 134 min concert and a 4 song acoustic bonus set. Picture quality is excellent. No issues to speak of other than the occasional soft shot due to focus issues. Good encode and editing.

Unlike some bands they haven't fixed some minor performance flubs - the show's there with out any tinkering. Mix is pretty solid too. I'm pretty picking being a musician and there are really only a couple of minor things and most can be put down to personal preference. One big beef I have is the crowd to music mix ratio. Some mix the crowd so loud or boost it in the crowd participation bits. Fortunately this one's a very realistic mix and seeing as though the mix perspective is basically where I was standing I can vouch 100% for it being a good recreation of the live experience.

I show up in stacks of shots which is either a good or bad thing. Hey, at least I had an awesome time as did everyone - seriously, look at the smiles on the faces in the crowd.

Cover art states region free but I'll confirm that tonight. It's getting a US release in 3 weeks it appears so everyone in region A land might want to pick that one up, assuming the specs are comparable.

Confirmed region free folks and the set list is as follows:

The River
The Bazaar
Lullaby
Psychopomp
Correspondences
The Messenger
Fire in the Head
The Badger
Shadows on the Mountainside
Sun Going Down
Halcyon Days
Save Me
Heaven Coming Down
Release
Temptation
Sister Awake

Acoustic set (recorded live at the Cherry Bar, Melbourne):

Sun Going Down
The Messenger
Requiem
The Bazaar

The acoustic set is 720p with DTS-HD MA 2.0. Audio for that set appears to be from the soundboard. Nice special feature though.

No issues like that with the Aussie disc. Channel assignment was fine With only crowd and a small amount of reverberated instruments in the surrounds. Good prioritisation of vocals through the centre channel too. Issue with the Canadian disc authoring perhaps?

the band's website posted a release about the discs with the audio errors.

It has come to our attention that some of the recently released Blu-ray/DVD discs have an audio mix-up. Here’s is the official statement from ViaVision in Australia, who is the label

STATEMENT TO FANS

“It has recently come to our attention that on some copies of The Tea Party Live In Australia release, there is a manufacturing error that creates misassigned channels on the 5.1.

The issue has been addressed but if you feel that your copy has this issue, please email: theteaparty@viavision.com.au and we will tell you how you can get a replacement disc.”

Splendor Solis is an amazing debut, BUT, they kept getting more introverted and diverse with each album. I get lost everytime i listen to any of their albums, and i mean that in a great way!!

I don't think so. Having said that, when they play live some of the electric guitar work is simplified or an amalgamation of the multiple tracks in the recording and I think that with the exception of the acoustic instrumentals the electric guitar work is often more complex. Add in the fact that he's often singing at the same time and the electric guitar allows for a little more imprecision and hides some sloppier work.

I'm not taking anything away from his playing though and the show was excellent in person and great on the Blu-ray.

I can't wait to hear what comes out of the studio this year from them. It's going to be great to have a new Tea Party album to listen to.
