Early announcement to retailers suggest that the fifth installment in the Resident Evil series will see a Blu-ray release on December 18th, 2012. No official announcement from the studio detailing special features or technical specifications.

Discuss anticipations for the film opening in theaters this Friday, but please use spoiler tags when discussing plot points.

Love the games, HATE the movies. Degeneration was okay, though and Afterlife was a pretty hilarious movie to make fun of with some friends.

I hope it does come out that soon. Afterlife was released in December, so it's no surprise this will also. Can't wait!

They're always released at the end of December / start of January.

I am contemplating seeing this at the movies. I have seen all the other ones (on DVD) but I'm not sure if I want to waste the money at the theater, considering I will buy it a couple months later.

Three months after theatrical release means zero confidence in box office performance, no matter what the time of year.

This probably means that the Blu-rays have already been manufactured.

I rarely go to the theater, especially since blu-ray came into existence. lol

Actually, I've got to think that Sony has high hopes for the box office of this film, given that each movie in this series has made more than the last.

Afterlife made nearly $300M worldwide. i think this can top $300M

It will do about 45-50 million domestically. Worldwide I see it doing 200+ million.


This year box office has been crappy. Aside from 6-7 movies.

I don't think early release dates announcements mean anything regarding box office. If SONY already expects this to fail, why would it have been made after 4 films already? That makes no sense whatsoever and that is totally untrue.

The bottom line is, these films make money. Whether you like them or not. I, for one, obviously love them and will go see this.

Fair enough. Nonetheless, I don't think they're announcing the BD release because they feel like this is dead in the water.

And there have been a lot of movies released this year that have had early home video announcements. Some before and right after the premiere.

If these don't do great at the box office, then why does Sony even bother making them? The critics certainly don't like them and the fans of the game series despise them.

Sony spends almost no money on these movies and the box office they do pull in plus the home video money is a profit. Not gigantic profit but steady profit. Kinda like the Saw films.
