George A. Romero, director of the original Night of the Living Dead, is one of the horror genre's most celebrated filmmakers. Roy Frumkes' amazing 1978 documentary Document of the Dead was an intimate look at Romero's creative process, with an outstanding collection of interviews, effects demonstrations (courtesy of make-up artist, Tom Savini) and behind-the-scenes footage from the classic horror film, Dawn of the Dead. This newly re-edited and re-mastered 2012 version of the award-winning documentary contains all-new exclusive material including additional interviews with Romero's family and friends, candid on-set footage from Two Evil Eyes, Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, Survival of the Dead and many more surprises. The Definitive Document of the Dead is a loving portrait of a horror legend, and a must-see for any hardcore horror fan!

The release contains a DVD of the new version of The Definitive Document of the Dead (along with the new commentary), as well as a Blu-ray of the original 66 minute 16mm 1979 version of Document of the Dead, created for educational use at The School of Visual Arts, remastered in high-definition. Also included in this limited edition combo is a fold-out poster, created by artist Wes Benscoter, of the new George A. Romero painting used on the cover art.

Actually, I'm starting to think I don't really need this new edition (I quite like LotD, but hated Diary so much that I still haven't checked out Survival....). I'm a big fan of Synapse, but still, I think it's shitty that they don't even at least ship the exclusive stuff worldwide.

The DVD edition (the one for pre-order) has extended stuff from George's newer films. Not sure if you noticed or not.

Blows my mind why the new stuff is ONLY on the DVD.

But the BD only has the 66 minute cut?

how about a nice spiffy blu transfer of the 1968 film, that would have been the ultimate bonus for fans, ya know, a US release!

also: someone really needs to ask Synapse what they are thinking--the "new" edit should certainly also be on blu.
could it be some strange rights issue?
like they could only legally do a dvd of the new cut.
that's the only thing that would make any sense to me.

+ Don May Jr of Synapse was involved with the Elite version of NOTLD, it could have easliy been included in this set

I'd be interested in seeing the documentary but I think the preorder price is too expensive. I'm not going to pay well over its worth because it is limited edition. A title like this is so niche that I'd be surprised if it sold 1500 copies without a limited run anyway.

I dunno, maybe the additional footage is in no condition for a HD transfer? Shot on video, maybe?

Yes, it has an audio commentary by the director and a few others, deleted scenes and interview footage shot on the set of Two Evil Eyes. I guess they simply edited that footage or part of it into the cut from the previous special edition DVD, which is 84 min. Seems to me owners of the DVD won't get much added value to speak of.
