By...? I won't be excited until we know which company is releasing this.

EDIT: found that the first six digits match that of Kino's UPCs! I can dig it now!

I thought Troma had distribution rights for White Zombie? The full movie is up on their Youtube channel.

Think it's PD, so you don't know where it's been, but a Kino rescue would be very, very nice.

There is some question about whether WZ is PD or not. I was told by a disc producer recently that he looked into it but that someone does own it (and he couldn't get it released).

Troma acquired the Roan version when they acquired Roan. That has, until now, been considered the best version available. Interesting to note that amazon.com has a long memory...I was just at the site and they informed me that I bought the Roan DVD on November 19,2002!

As for whether or not it's public domain...let's just say that ownership is going to be a tough genie to put back in the bottle. Everyone and his dog have released WHITE ZOMBIE on home video. Somebody can try to claim ownership but I doubt if it would be worth the court time with amazon listing it for sale on 300 DVDs.

But count me in on day one for a KINO Blu-ray.

Well, if Kino was able to source a 35mm print for this a la Fear and Desire, then that would explain it, although the choice of release date is strange. Perhaps they could not finish the mastering in time for Autumn / Halloween 2012?

...probably the very definition of a 'pyrrhic victory' Dex. At this late date, it seems to matter less who actually owns some of these old bargain bin staples (if anyone), but who has access to the best surviving prints and intermediary elements. In most cases, if not all, the original negs for these titles are long gone.

To date, KINO's deepest and richest well has been the David O. Selznick Collection and Eastman House. Of course, some of these Blu-rays have been better quality than others, but all have been welcome in my collection because they still represent a significant improvement over legacy DVDs transferred from battered nth generation 16mm prints. I'm glad now that I resisted all of those titles on DVD, including White Zombie, because many are blind buys and I like my first encounter with a film to be decent quality.

Ditto. Especially if White Zombie is from the Selznick Collection and Eastman House, that's all I need to know...

I, like some others apparently, also have the Roan dvd, and will be very interested to see what this bd looks like. Certainly an amazing little film, but one I didn't see coming to bd anytime soon because of the lack of decent materials.
(not that the pd company's would care I guess)
guess we'll find out what they came up with soon enough.
definitely a surprising release.

Day 1 for me. Classic film. I've been hoping for this, but thought it was a long shot.

Well if it is Kino I would expect a good deal of supplements, maybe some of what was on the Roan DVD. Wishful thinking but Id call it possible
