Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has officially announced both the standard 3-disc Blu-ray/UltraViolet and 5-disc 3D BD/Ultraviolet Combo Pack releases of director Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Extended Edition. Both versions of the 182-minute Extended Cut arrive on Blu-ray on November 5th.

Standard 3-Disc Blu-ray/UltraViolet Combo Pack

5-Disc 3D Blu-ray/UltraViolet Combo Pack

The new Extended Cut includes 13 minutes of extra film footage that extends individual scenes, making this the must-see, definitive version for fans. All disc versions of the Extended Edition include nearly nine hours of new bonus features.

"I'm thrilled that the Extended Edition will give fans the opportunity to experience certain key scenes in the film as they were originally shot, as well as an abundance of special features," said Jackson. "It's exciting to present this expanded and enriched version of An Unexpected Journey to allow fans to fully immerse themselves in the movie, before seeing the second part of the trilogy."

Film synopsis: Unassuming Hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) is swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Bilbo finds himself among a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Their journey takes them through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs, giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. They must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature Gollum (Andy Serkis), who will change his life forever. Alone with Gollum on the shores of an underground lake, Bilbo not only discovers guile and courage that surprise him, he also gains possession of Gollum's "precious," a ring tied to the fate of all Middle-Earth.

Tech specs have yet to be fully detailed, but are expected to be revealed soon. Cover art is final. Special features available on both the 2D and 3D releases of the Extended Edition include:

The Filmmakers' Commentary - Director/writer/producer Peter Jackson and writer/co-producer Philippa Boyens provide their perspective and stories on creating the first film.

New Zealand: Home of Middle-Earth - From Matamata to Queenstown, travel with Peter Jackson and his team across the stunning locations of New Zealand, transformed by the filmmakers into Middle-Earth.

The Appendices Part 7: A Long-Expected Journey - A 14-part chronological history of the filming of An Unexpected Journey, covering pre-production in the various departments of the film in the months leading up to the start of principal photography, the boot camp training for the main cast, and the work done on set chronologically through the three shooting blocks and in the world of its digital effects. They've already expanded this from two to three movies - how much more "extended" is it gonna get? Anything for a buck, I suppose...

Who am I kidding, I'll buy these if they're even half as good as his LOTR trilogy.

jackson's Middle Earth movies i will gladly drop some major coin on.

i'll be picking up both the standard release and the extended releases for all 3 movies.

and no, i will not be waiting for the inevitable "box set".....do u know how many times i'll watch these individual releases before a box set ever sees the light of day??

Someone should also make a thread for that Best of Warner Bros. 50 Film (!) Collection, currently running for about $420 (!).

Extended Editions for The Hobbit come as no surprise. It seems as though all of Jackson's epics have extended home video versions.

Wonder if they'll eventually release a giant 6-movie extended edition set including both Middle Earth trilogies?

Wish they'd just skip the theatrical blu-ray releases and just go right to the Extended Cut. If we already know its next year Q4 then why even bother with theatrical? Possibly for people who don't read up on it maybe?
