Joel Coen and Ethan Coen concocted this stylish screwball comedic amalgam of Frank Capra and Howard Hawks. Tim Robbins stars as Norville Barnes, a dull-wit from Muncie, Indiana who wrangles a job with the big Hudsucker Industries. He has a singular idea for a new children's toy that he wants to present to corporate executive Sidney J. Mussberger (Paul Newman). As he makes his way up to Mussberger's office, the company president Waring Hudsucker (Charles Durning) is on his way down -- through the window of the forty-fourth floor boardroom! Hudsucker's death sets off a panic that Mussberger sees as an opportunity for taking over the company -- by installing a total incompetent in Hudsucker's place and devaluing the stock. When Barnes stumbles into Mussberger's office, Mussberger sees his pigeon and appoints Barnes as the new company president. The only problem is that the new product Barnes proposes for the company, the Hula Hoop, turns out to be a tremendous success, and Mussberger has difficulty manipulating his new corporate president.

I was beginning to think this awesome film was forever forgotten.

I don't know why they don't think a Coen film has enough broad appeal just from their name to make it as a wide release...

I'm going to cross my fingers that it isn't MOD, but I guess at this point I'll take what I can get.

Burbank, Calif., November 15, 2012 -- The Warner Archive Collection (WAC) – the
Warner Bros. Digital Distribution (WBDD) division dedicated to releasing on DVD
previously unavailable films and television shows – today announced the launch
of its first Blu-ray™ titles. The two titles, Deathtrap and Gypsy, will debut
on November 20. Beginning in February 2013, WAC expects to release a minimum of
one to two Blu-ray titles per month. Future titles include The Hudsucker Proxy
and Fearless.

WAC reports that the Blu-ray discs will be replicated in limited quantities and
fulfilled on demand. All releases will leverage high quality 1080p masters. In
many instances, as with Deathtrap, the films will be available for the first
time for home viewing in their original widescreen format.

Starting as a modest initiative, WAC has quickly grown to become a new business
model for the studio and a recognized industry leader. Since launching in March
2009, WAC has released more than 1,500 films, short subjects, TV movies and
mini-series that otherwise would not have been available, providing a valuable
service to film lovers everywhere.

Now, WACÂ’s entry into the Blu-ray market is the latest example of its fast
growth and increasing popularity with consumers who have embraced the technology
as the standard for the highest quality home movie viewing on disc. This year,
domestic sales of catalog titles on Blu-ray grew 22% in the third quarter from a
year earlier. In fact, Blu-ray sales have shown impressive gains every quarter
in 2012, continuing the trend set in 2011 over 2010 when sales were up 20%.[1]

In making the Blu-ray announcement, WBDD President Thomas Gewecke said, “This
is an important innovation that fulfills consumer demand for high definition
releases that otherwise would not be available in physical formats. WeÂ’re
excited to have the opportunity to further expand the Warner Archive Collection
into the Blu-ray marketplace with an impressive slate of releases.”

Wouldn't you think the BD titles would show up either on Ebay or through some Amazon reseller that will ship overseas?

There was an explosion of Coen debuts on Blu last year then nothing for a while. I've been waiting on Fox to release Barton Fink in the US but I may just import soon and then I'll have the first 8 Coen films on Blu and the last 4 as well. That just leaves Universal and Disney with the 3 unreleased Coen films in the middle.

Fun movie. Wouldn't it be cool if it had a feature where you could have all the lines of one actor--I don't know, say Jennifer Jason Leigh--muted and replaced with subtitles?
