Saw this on the blu-ray news but couldn't find a thread. Excellent news but no pre orders up yet.

I wrote in a home video article not three days ago in an entry on The Man In The White Suit –
"Studio Canal’s quest to release the complete output of Ealing Studies continues at great pace (it was only last week that It Always Rains On Sunday was brought to disc). But alas, the only question we’re asking here is “Where, o’ where is The Titfield Thunderbolt?". Needless to say I'm very excited to see it announced today! |

The first Ealing comedy shot in Technicolour so it should make a good blu. Stanley Holloway is great in this film. I hope the Ealing issues eventually get round to Meet Mr Lucifer. Based on a play by Arnold Ridley (Godfrey in Dad's Army) its the story of the devil using a TV set to spread misery. Holloway is the main reason to see it, playing the devil and the washed up panto actor who's his minion, the film comes alive when he's onscreen and falls a bit flat when he isn't though Kay Kendall is excellent as The Lonely Hearts Singer

On the Blu cover it looks like they are waving to something else, maybe the competing bus company. But as long as they do a good job with the restoration i'll be happy. |

Oh dear, looking at the screen captures it would seem that we have a transfer from another colourist with a bias for green hues. This movie was shot on 3 strip TECHNICOLOR and should look perfect, green misty hues were not part of it. Looks like a new 'African Queen' lookalike with that great movies green tinged GREY blankets. I will rent before buying just in case the captures are wrong, if they are not its a sad day for a wonderful movie.

I loved this film as a child and will be keen to see it again, not least to see if the revelation I had when I saw it whilst at University stands up all these years later - that it has a bit of a class snobbery issue about it. Namely that you should trust those nice aristocratic folk and have nothing to do with the uncouth working class types who want to start a bus service.
But I must admit to have been looking for political messages in everything at that time so it will be good to see it again now. |

I think its more conservative with a small c but mostly its a film praising amateurism rather than any overt class based message.
I do hope it looks better than those murky green grey captures. Where are the bright whites and reds of Technicolor? The prints shown on TV look better than that

I suppose the issue may be if you are expecting bright blue sky and pink faces. Definitely the first two screenshots do have some tint and are not bright colours.
It looks okay to me, but not if you are expecting a bright technicolor film like Wizard of Oz say. |
