Initially, but the reviews from the critics got better as the week went along. 79% on Rotten Tomatoes is pretty solid.

I love this film. Fantastic acting and dialogue. I plan to see it again before it leaves theatres, and I will definitely purchase the Blu-ray.
I would advise fans of directors such as David Mamet, Michael Mann, and Nicolas Winding Refn, as well as, of course, Andrew Dominik's past films (Chopper, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford), to give this a chance and not let the hilarious and undeserved F CinemaScore deter them.
top five films of 2013 (so far) --
1. Trance (Boyle) 2. The Great Gatsby (Luhrmann) 3. Before Midnight (Linklater) 4. The Place Beyond the Pines (Cianfrance) 5. Stories We Tell (Polley) |

The level of hatred this film has recieved just makes me want to watch it more. Same with Cosmopolis. I tend to fall into the former of love it or hate it films. I think it's just fun enjoying something that so many people hate or perhaps they are brilliant movies that not enough people appreciate? I don't know. Killing Them Softly has been raped pretty brutally via word of mouth and has been deemed a failure. I'm in.

Very good film, updating George V. Higgins' novel Cogan's Trade from 1974 works well and the commentary on capitalism gives it more depth. Higgins was one of America's best crime writers but his style, mostly dense chunks of very realistic dialogue, can be hard to digest. The Robert Mitchum film of The Friends Of Eddie Coyle needs a blu release and Higgins' final novel At End Of Day would suit Scorsese

If you're referring to the ham-fisted political commentary running throughout the film, then I certainly agree, it's about as subtle as a gut punch. It was a weak, tacked-on attempt to make the film as something more than it is, which was unneccesary to begin with, because it's a fine crime thriller with outstanding performances all around and some of the best dialog of any film in the past year.
I'll probably spring for it after a price drop. |
