I haven't, and it's not because of the subject matter. I try to avoid films that were generally panned by critics (sitting at 11% on the Tomatometer, and 24% by the audience).

So after several clicking and loading sounds, this movie finally decided to play. I never heard clicks before.
It required me to restart my player a few times. I noticed that the edge of the disc is a little rough. I'm not sure what that's about. Should I be worried? Last edited by iScottie; 01-17-2013 at 05:33 PM. |

Ashley Hinshaw portrays Angelina, a high school student who is currently living a troubled life. She works a low paying job at the laundromat so that she can help out her alcoholic mother and her younger sister. When she is not working, she spends time with her boyfriend who is constantly degrading her. All of this soon changes, however, when Angelina decides to move to San Francisco along with her best friend Andrew (portrayed by Dev Patel) in order to leave her current life behind. In San Francisco, she gets a job as a bartender at a strip club, where she meets Francis (portrayed by James Franco), a drug-addicted attorney. After one of the dancers recommends that Angelina tries out for adult entertainment, she decides to give it a shot. There, she meets Margaret (portrayed by Heather Graham), a lesbian film director who becomes intrigued by Angelina (who is currently operating under the stage name of Cherry).
The most important thing that came out of this film, in my opinion, was the personal issues that each character faced and the struggles that they had to eventually overcome. From personal crises, to moral decisions, to everyday life, About Cherry has it all and then some. The only question that I could constantly ask myself while watching Stephen Elliott's "About Cherry" is whether this film is an accurate depiction of real life or not. I understand that a lot of individuals who get involved in the adult entertainment industry do so from a financial standpoint or as a means to some end, but this girl's troubled life that she leaves behind and the new life that she develops in San Francisco was beyond anything that I had ever seen before. If anybody is on the fence of seeing this film, I would definitely recommend renting it first instead of blind buying it. It definitely isn't for everybody and it definitely has its uncomfortable moments. The storyline wasn't very well thought-out and some of the acting, besides Ashley Hinshaw and James Franco's performances, seemed awkward and forced. However, the biggest downfall of this film, for me personally, was that it wasn't very consistent. The film constantly jumps around and the viewer can only help but wonder, "how did this character get here?" Do not go into this film expecting another "Boogie Nights" because unfortunately, About Cherry does not live up to the legacy that Paul Thomas Anderson left behind with his 1997 film. 3/5 at best.
