Coming from NewVideo, DVD on 1/18/2013, BD on 1/22/2013 for some reason.

Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai Blu-ray PRE-ORDER

Looks like it will be the 2D version only, not the 3D.

Glad to see this finally getting a US release. It was released in the UK last year as a Play.Com exclusive. Haven't heard too much about it.

I'm a pretty big fan of Miike though in general, so I'm sure I'll probably check it out.

I highly recommend it, great film. I never seen this remake, so I don' know if it's better.

I watched it in 3D, but the 3D was so subtle that you could barely tell. Seemed a bit pointless.

Bloody, yes, but quite restrained considering the director. The UK disc is region free and is not a play.com exclusive anymore. But there are no extras and the coverart is godawful.

Are you sure? I tried looking at Amazon and HMV, but I couldn't find it, and Play.com still lists it as an exclusive.

The original was great and you really can't go wrong with takashi miike. All his works are usually above average to great. I also heard the remake is well done. So we'll see.

No offense to Geoffrey Gilmore, but from the sound of the OP, this doesn't have any extras of note either ("Presented by American Express"? WTF?). Given the rather significant difference in asking price (at least for now), I'm tempted to just get the UK version unless this is a significantly better transfer or something.

Edit: Ugh, never mind. The UK version was part of the "2 for £12" deal on Zavvi when I had looked before, but I'd put off ordering because I'd already spent too much money last month. Now they're not listing it at all.

DVDTalk has a review up, and they say that the 'discussion' featurette is less than 2 minutes long! That's the only bonus on there.
Considering the vast extras on the Japanese disc (documentary, interviews, premiere footage, trailers, and more), and having both the 3D and 3D versions, the US and UK releases are more like a joke.
