USA Ministry Of Fear (1944) (The Criterion Collection) - March 12, 2013

Ministry Of Fear (1944)

Quote:
Disc Features
New 2K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition
New interview with Fritz Lang scholar Joe McElhaney
Trailer
PLUS: An essay by critic Glenn Kenny
Quote:
Suffused with dread and paranoia, this Fritz Lang adaptation of a novel by Graham Greene is a plunge into the eerie shadows of a world turned upside down by war. En route to London after being released from a mental institution, Stephen Neale (Ray Milland) stops at a seemingly innocent village fair, after which he finds himself caught in the web of a sinister underworld with possible Nazi connections. Lang was among the most illustrious of the European émigré filmmakers working in Hollywood during World War II, and Ministry of Fear is one of his finest American productions, an unpredictable thriller with style to spare.

The more Lang, the merrier.

Can't wait to check this out. Milland is in it and he was incredible in "The Lost Weekend", that's the icing on the cake.

Happy to upgrade my UK DVD. This film has one of my favorite openings ever. Wonderfully atmospheric stuff.

There is an interview, but I agree about the lazy cover art. So many evocative and moody moments in the film to draw on for a properly shadowy noir cover, and this is the best they could come up with? What about the cake?! With the restoration and low price point though, I can also overlook the design and skimpy extras.

And to think that we have still been waiting for an authorized Region 1 DVD release. And now this. Wow! Who cares about the cover art. It's a restored version of this great classic that is important.

This airs on TCM late night December 30th if anyone's interested.

I've checked out a couple of Lang's American movies recently, and they've been great, but I haven't quite found one I feel the need to own (as I do M, Metropolis, Das Testamant des Dr. Mabuse). Maybe this'll be one.

Also, I kinda dig the cover art.

As good as many of Lang's best American films are (Fury, Woman in the Window, Manhunt, Scarlet Street, The Big Heat....and dare I say You and Me), I don't think any of them hold a candle to his best German films. And no I'm not saying that's a reason not to buy any of them, I just don't think any of them are on the same level of excellence.

Lack of extras although this one does have an 18 min interview. They have others that are priced cheaper for that reason, too.
