Italy Haunted (1995)

This little-known British ghost film is directed by Lewis Gilbert (Alfie, You Only Live Twice, Educating Rita), filmed by Tony Pierce-Roberts (A Room with a View, Howards End), edited by John Jympson (Zulu, A Hard Day's Night, A Fish Called Wanda) and stars Aidan Quinn, Kate Beckinsale and Sir John Gielgud:

The Blu-ray's video quality is stunning, while the audio is solid with English Dolby Digital Stereo (224Kbps). There are no special features and the disc is regions B and C locked. I recommend this release to any haunted house fans!

I just watched this after importing from Italy.

I watched with the English DD 2.0 track without subtitles and for around six scenes sporadically placed in the movie, Italian subtitles switched themselves on for the duration of the scene then off for the next scene. There was no way to remove them.

I tried it on two different players and the same thing happened which was highly annoying.

I also tried to the Italian DTS-HD track and for about a minute it played HD in English, the switched the the Italian dub.

Did anyone else have this issue or do I have a duff disk?

Yes, mine has subtitles in four scenes. There's a disclaimer at the beginning. I think it adds up to a few minutes.

Thanks for confirming,

I'll have to go back and translate the disclaimer as Italian in not a language I am familiar with. I assumed it was a standard piracy notice you get before most films load.

It seems to be a strange one, apart from this the film and picture quality were excellent.

I loved Debbie Wiseman's theme for this film...haunting and beautiful. A forgotten gem.

Default Haunted Cover Art/Slipcover

Just got mine in. Very nice semi glossy slip. The black text is the glossy part and some of the images on the back of the slip are glossy as well.

Confirmed not Region A playable as well. Just from seeing the disc menu I can tell what a great upgrade this will be!

This sounds like the all too common issue of an incomplete dubbed audio track. The parts that were either lost (or in some cases, never dubbed) are replaced with original audio and relevant subtitles.
"You might very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment."

Default New Haunted Blu-ray In Japan

So there's a new version of this coming out in Japan in March. I did a blind buy as, honestly, the subtitles drive me crazy on this. I fully admit they shouldn't and this is a failing on my part, given how much better the picture was on "Fantasmi" than my old dvd, and because of this, I'm willing to shell out $35 on the off chance there are none on this release. The official listing on Amazon jp lists it as being 1:78:1 and having english and japanese dub language tracks. Just thought I'd post this for anyone watching the forum. We have a new option.

Thanks so much for the info! I've always loved this subtle film and have had it on DVD for a long time. I can't find a different thread for this film under Asia.

Did you get the Japanese version yet? Comments?

I ordered the Japanese version and it should be here via Fed Ex on Monday. I'll watch it Tuesday and then get back to ya.

I can confirm that this is a Region A title with both Japanese and English audio. (Stereo only)

No English subtitles are available.

Okay. As for the transfer, it can be said like this.

At times, the transfer is absolutely gorgeous. The colors are so bright and vibrant and others, the transfer could be better. (Night time scenes)

I could not see if any DNR had been used. If it has, they didn't overdo it.

All in all, an overall good transfer makes this a quality release considering that I really don't think this will ever get a true USA release.

Ok just ordered the Japanese version. I really love this little film and don't want to miss out on getting a decent Blu-ray transfer. Anyone else have this?
Update-Japanese Version
So I ordered this and I got to check it out today. I'll write some of my opinion on it for anyone looking at this thread in the future. For reference I still have an Hdnet Directv recording on an old HdTiVo of this film. Unfortunately when I recorded it 10 plus years ago some of the recording was messed up in parts. Hdnet did the transfer and it is in 1:78 and 5.1. This blu-ray has some weird ratio not 4:3 but it does contain slight black bars on each side maybe 1:66?. Not distracting but it doesn't fill the whole screen like 1:78 does. Not sure of the original aspect ratio of this film guessing 1:66 but I have seen it done 3 different ways now. I'd give this Bluray a solid 4/5 with my Hdnet transfer 4.5/5. Night time scenes look good while daytime look great. Sound is pcm stereo and sounds decent. This Blu-ray is probably the best option we have now for this film. It plays on my US player no problem. Overall, I'm happy to have a very good copy of the film on Blu-ray as I'm not sure if this title will be released again anytime soon.
