Default Hello, Dolly! - April 2, 2013

Hello, Dolly! Blu-ray

It's official... Hello, Dolly! is coming to Blu-ray on April 2!

Most exciting news! One of my all-time favorite musicals! Day one for me!

And, YES, I realize it's a:

Chick flick alert!

Chick flick alert!

I don't care! I'm going to buy it anyway!

Mark

Not Streisand's best by a long shot but any of her classic films (mostly anything through Yentl) is welcome on Blu by me

I was lucky enough to recently see this in a pristine 70mm print with full 6-track stereo sound, and all I can say is "Wow!". You haven't really seen Dolly until you've seen it in Todd-AO in it's original roadshow format. While not as spectacular, Blu-ray has got to beat the pants off the lousy DVD that exists now. Needless to say, I'll be buying a copy.

I saw Hello, Dolly! at Grauman's Chinese with my mom and sisters back when it was first released. We sat through it twice. Streisand was way too young to play the part back then.

If you remember this...

It came from Hello, Dolly!

The film is famous for many things...

It's the movie that bankrupted 20th Century Fox, forcing them to sell off their backlot (which became the commercial property of Century City).

Streisand and Mathau hated each other. Streisand and director Gene Kelly didn't get on, either. And rumor has it that Louie Armstrong hated Streisand's version of the title song.

Michael Crawford, who squeaks as Cornelius Hackle, went on to be the original musical Phantom of the Opera.

From the underwhelming number of responses to this topic, I guess Hello, Dolly! isn't on everyone's radar.

Now that this is on the way, bring on 'Paint Your Wagon'!

Dolly didn't single-handedly bankrupt Fox. The disappointing returns of Star! and Doctor Dolittle from the previous two years already set that ball in motion. Dolly was the fourth highest-grossing movie of that year, and according to the box office website The Numbers, grossed $33.2 million, against a budget of $24 million, technically making it a success--just not enough of one to save the studio from near ruin.

Speaking of Star!--I'd love to see that one on Blu someday. Totally underrated. The sets, costumes and gigantic musical numbers would look amazing!

Preordered! Can't wait for this (and Funny Girl)! Only wish it were getting a deluxe treatment, like Sound of Music did.

This is true. Hello Dolly might've not been as successful as Funny Girl but it still made its money back for Fox.

Actually, box office numbers vary on Hello, Dolly! Some say the rentals only amounted to $13-16 million. The Hollywood Reporter Book Of Box-Office Hits lists it as $15,200,000. It cost Fox $26,400,00. That amount from The Numbers is highly suspicious because they don't show the breakdown. Check out their listing for Gone with the Wind. It shows that tons of the amount came from rereleases, etc.

Yes, which is why I included the opening clip in post #6 above.

Guess I missed that...thanks. Never seen it, but looks and sounds like a fun musical. Seeing as my daughter has dreams of performing on Broadway one day, I'm thinking she would enjoy this.

I thought Twilight Time was rumoured to release it, but I guess that wasn't true.

As for Dolly!, I've waited a long time for it to show up on Blu-ray and I eagerly await its release!

The only Streisand movie I don't hate. I saw it, many times, during it's original roadshow release. Magnificent in 70mm Todd-AO. Despite being the 5th (not 4th) highest grossing film of the year, it did not return anywhere near its cost, back then. However, over time (video sales) it finally has gone into the black.

I also wish they would release a Blu of STAR!, which is another great-looking Todd-AO film. The DVD is, horribly rendered, with an amber hue, which did not exist in the original roadshow release.

I'm so happy that Dolly is being released. It's been a favorite for a long time. It's a sumptuous, gorgeous looking film. The musical numbers are incredible and Streisand is at her very best.

Just keeping my fingers crossed that they have done a good job with the audio. The DVD's sound was very poor. The previous laser disc release had better audio. Will they do justice on blu to this great score that won the Academy Award for best sound? Hope so.

Love the film and have it pre ordered. My favorite scene has got to be with the great Louis Armstrong.
I still laugh out loud when Walter Matthau sings about husky women in the "It Takes A Woman" number because, let's face it, he was a great actor, but no singer.
"If we're about to die anyways, I'd rather die fighting! Come for me Gmork, I am Atreyu!"

"And use some of that cologne Gertrude got you for Christmas."
"Oh do I have to Mother, it smells like ether?"

" I told you 158 times I hate little notes on my pillow. 'We are all out of Corn Flakes F.U.' it took me three hours to realize that F.U. stood for Felix Ungar."
