Default Lost in Space (Series) - Remastered in HD

As posted on the Classic Horror Film Board, Lost in Space is being/has been remastered in high definition. Example has been posted on YouTube, with debate about what aspect ratio it should be presented in in the comments.

Ahhh....memories.

Lost in Space used to air on TBS Superstation on Sunday mornings during my childhood. When my brother and I finished getting dressed for church, we would watch this show while our parents finished getting ready. About five minutes before the end of the episode each week, our parents would turn the television off and we would leave for church. I never got to see how any of the episodes ended.

I've probably seen every single Lost in Space episode a dozen times over, but I honestly do not believe that I've ever seen the ending of one.

If this show comes out on Blu-ray, I might actually be able to watch these episodes in their entirety. I have this eerie suspicion, though, that I might hear a knock on the door of my home five minutes before the end of each episode, and that my parents will have driven an hour from their house to mine to invite me to church.

At any rate, this could be great news.

Looks like it was originally filmed in 1:78 and black bars added for 60s TVs.

great news, but why would there be any debate about aspect ratio? they always want to pull this sh%%t.
put it out in 1.37:1 or don't release it at all.
simple as that.
imo even if it was filmed in 16:9 it shouldn't matter one bit because that's not the way it was exhibited. Now one could argue well they had no choice, and that's true. but the fact remains everyone watched it in 1:37:1 and that's the way it should be preserved on bd.
simple as that imo.
my 3 cents.

You're joking, right? Go to the 5:32 mark of the YouTube video.

This is great news! Never thought I'd see this land on blu. I'm actually really excited about this.

Damn...now I'll have to get surgery.

My doctor figures I have a chance of outliving my prostate cancer but if there's any possibility of LOST IN SPACE ever coming to Blu-ray, I can't take a chance on dying before that happens. I'll have to get this fixed.

I'm a LOST IN SPACE superfan. In my entire life, I have only obsessed about one thing: LOST IN SPACE. Never cared for Trek. Never seen Star Wars. I was pure "Lisfan" to the core.

When the DVD's came out (ironically, right after my colon cancer surgery...I've had some bad luck ), I was crushed. The DVDs were awful. To this day, the Lost in Space DVDs are among the worst TV DVDs ever produced. In fact, I will go so far as to say that they ARE the worst TV DVDs ever produced by a major studio. The DVDs were (and are) worse looking than the broadcast versions I was seeing over 10 years ago.

A producer named Kevin Burns had overseen LIS transfers for a limited number of Fox VHS tapes. These are not to be confused with the full series sold by Columbia House. Fox sold a limited number of tapes they did themselves...only a few episodes. These were remastered for the Fox VHS tapes. When the DVDs were released, Fox went back to vintage videotape masters (circa 1981 as I recall) for the DVDs. They didn't even use the limited number of new transfers they had because they didn't want the newly transferred episodes to show how poorly the other episodes looked and they didn't want to spend the money to remaster all of them. So the whole hideous release was done with ancient videotape masters.

If this comes to Blu-ray, I will do the hyper happy dance...with whatever remaining body parts I still have left.

Of course, you are absolutely correct and we shouldn't count our chickens before they are hatched. Blu-rays are still just a dream.

That being said, the most expensive part of any blu-ray production is the restoration and transfer of original source material to provide HD masters.

If HD masters exist, then there also exists the possibility that Blu-rays may be produced. Perhaps not even by Fox themselves...but if HD masters are made then it becomes feasible for a smaller company to produced licensed Blu-rays. Think of somebody like Image with THE TWILIGHT ZONE or THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW.
