USA Leni Riefenstahl's "Triumph of the Will"

Synapse's release will be released on December 8, 2015

Amazon pre-order http://www.amazon.com/Triumph-Will-2...n%3A2650305011

Quote:
Leni Riefenstahl's classic piece of historical filmmaking, filmed during the 1934 Nazi Party Rally in Nuremberg, Germany, is considered by many to be one of the most important films ever made. Realized by Paul Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's Reich Minister for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, this film was created to influence all of Germany to support the power of the Nazi Party.

Historically significant and, at times, a horrifyingly manipulative exercise in propaganda for the Nazi regime, TRIUMPH OF THE WILL continues to be controversial eighty years after its original release and has been banned in Germany for many decades. Until her death in 2003, Riefenstahl was under fire for her personal relationship with Adolph Hitler, spending her life haunted by the shadow of the Nazi Party.

This all-new remastered version of TRIUMPH OF THE WILL is derived from a new 2K scan, digitally corrected and restored under the supervision of film historian and preservationist, Robert A. Harris.

Special Features:

All-new 2015 high-definition 2K remaster of TRIUMPH OF THE WILL from a duplicate 35mm fine grain master
Original German language with all-new on screen identifications and newly translated removable English subtitles for the speeches
Leni Riefenstahl's short film DAY OF FREEDOM (Remastered in 2K HD)
Audio Commentary by Dr. Anthony R. Santoro (Specialist on National Socialist German history)
Liner Notes

[Show spoiler]Update: 1/7/15

Robert Harris confirmed that the new blu-ray will be released by Synapse.

Read more about the restoration process here

$100?! And they're anticipating fairly high pre-sales? Good luck.

Over at HTF, Robert Harris has stated that Synapse will be putting out their version of Triumph of the Will on blu-ray soon.

Exact quote: "We're just completing our version of the film, derived from a 35mm duplicate fine grain master, which will be released shortly after this offering.

Ours will be coming from Synapse, priced around a hundred dollars less."

So THAT must be what their big mystery title is!
Damn, was really hoping they nabbed Suspiria off the Weinsteins
Thank god they won't be charging $150 for theirs though.

Was really hoping that Synapse would be releasing this title. I'm guessing RAH is saying that the Synapse release will have an MSRP of $49.99 or thereabouts. Judging from the DVD the elements aren't in great shape, so will be interesting to see what the results are...

December 16th? Not exactly the most seasonal of films.

I remember buying the DVD for $70 way back in 2007.

Not sure if this is worth the upgrade but as a person who studies and collects WW2 artifacts, I may sell my original DVD and pony up the cash for this.

It may have been made as propaganda but you don't have to swallow the sentiments to admire the technical achievements and artistry. I hope Synapse can come up with some good contextual material, it would be nice if they could include The Wonderful, Horrible Life Of Leni Riefenstahl. I hope Olympia gets a blu release soon

Mr. Harris's additional info on Synapse's edition.

Quote:
Digital clean-up has been under way for the past year, with a proposed early 2014 release date.

The commentary, identifications and annotations by Dr. Anthony Santoro, which were created for an earlier version, have

just be updated, corrected and extended.

Dr. Santoro is Distinguished Professor History and President Emeritus, Christopher Newport University, Newport News, Virginia,

and one of the most knowledgable historians on the era, and especially Nazi history.

The task of digital work has been performed by Greg Kimble, who was responsible for the beautiful work on the Cinerama films.

Framing has been corrected, now revealing the entire original 1.19:1 aspect ratio.

A formal announcement will be forthcoming shortly.

This has long been one of my favored projects, as it's one of the most brilliant (and frightening) films ever created. While many people place it in the documentary genre, that is one thing that it absolutely is not. Virtually every shot was created for specific purpose -- plotted and planned for position of cameras, and performances perfected to the highest degree.

The amount of detail ( one can now see camera rising on specially created platforms) in HD is startling.

Again me, lol.

InterFilmArt Entertainment has made a comment on their edition of TotE, over at HTF.

Quote:
I would just like to make a comment on our upcoming Restored Limited Edition of TRIUMPH OF THE WILL. First we negotiated with the rightful owners of this film some years ago to acquire an entire package of films directed by Ms. Riefenstahl and this year we were granted permission to have access to the director's original 35mm internegative which had been restored by Rudolf Goebel, a noted German film restoration who was responsible for restoring "Muenchhausen" (1943) in 1979. We are happy to announce that this film classic has been painstakingly restored to it's original pristine condition and this has been transferred directly to an HD file which is being used to replicate the Blurays. This process has cost us well over $275,000 and film buffs and scholars alike will view a version they have never had the opportunity to see previously. We are also including HD versions of the director's other documentaries (excluding "Olympia" which we intend on releasing on Bluray next year along with "War and Peace" on Bluray as well. An extensive poster/photo gallery will be included as well as a full color booklet on the history and controversial nature of the film. Also included is actual footage of Ms. Riefenstahl directing "Triumph" and other films; footage of the director accepting the National Film Prize by Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels in 1935. The original soundtrack recording will also be included as well as a CD-ROM of the book rumored to be written by the director herself, "Hinter den kulissen des Reichsparteitagsfilm" ("Behind the Scenes of the Party Rally Film," 1935, Franz Ehrer Verlag, Munich and a reproduction of the theater admission ticket with "Triumph des Willens" printed on the ticket and finally, an actual 35mm film frame from the film. The adudio has been restored to pristine condition featuring 5.1 Surround. Multiple removable subtitles as well including English, French, Italian, Spanish, etc. Chapter menus will be featured as well as a scene by scene breakdown. This is a limited numbered collector's edition and only 1000 copies will be sold. BONUS materials will include over two hours. The entire program runs over three hours in length and is the definitive version of this propaganda classic to date. A percentage of the sales will be donated to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.
