Default Vintage Speaker Thread

I'm curious how many others use vintage speakers in their HT. I got hooked on the sound of Genesis Physics speakers in the early 80's and just can't afford anything that I like better. They retailed for $250 back in the day and I'm fairly confident they would cost close to $1000 to match today. I use a set of Series 10's as my fronts. They have 8" woofers and 1" inverted dome tweeters and still sound great today. I did replace the woofers with units from Human Speakers which is run by Huw Powell who worked for Genesis Physics back in the day and bought out their equipment when they went belly-up. I chose to replace rather than refoam the woofers since the newer versions have increased x-max and butyl rubber surrounds. I also replaced the capacitors when the woofers were changed.

So, anyone else still using vintage speakers they just don't seem to be able to part with?

nice looking speaker you have there! i have a pair of Vintage Polk Audio SDA-2 speakers for my stereo rig at home and i have a pair of Monitor 5 Jr speakers in my office at work. i love the old speakers for music, i love the craftsmenship, the weight and the fact that they are 25+ years old and they still sound like they were brand new.

i wished i could have afforded these speakers when they were released. i had no idea of what real audio was back then nor could i have afforded it. i picked these up last year and my love for them has only grown more & more.

i believe they sound better than some of the newer things being released, of course, that's just my opinion and i am partial to the older speakers for music anyway, so, there you go.

i am also going to have the crossovers on the SDA's upgraded to new caps, resistors & wiring; the drivers will remain. they will also get new binding posts, interconnect jacks & interconnect cable. i plan on having this done soon.

i'll throw up some pictures tonight when i'm home. i'm at work listening to my Monitors!

i hope others come forward and contribute to this thread.

Thanks. Need to replace the old spring clips with binding posts on my Genesis as well. That's my next project. They have a few dings here and there at 30+ years old but I still love the sound, especially for music. Look forward to the pics and hope to see some participation here as well.

i'm having a 3rd party do the work for me. i take out the crossovers, old interconnect ports and binding posts. ship it out to them, they do the work & ship them back to me, i do the re-install. then comes the burn in. they have gotten very, very good customer reviews for their work and the end results. it will be nice to have the work done to put the internals at and possibly beyond "new outta the factory" with what they will be putting out.

when i get into doing that, i'll create a thread for it with lots of pictures during the entire process.

I use a pair of Klipsch Hersey's as my mains for my HT and 2ch setup. They are very detailed due to the horn tweeters and mids and I find that they are unforgiving of poor recordings but will shine with good ones.

Nice.

The Klipschorns are on my list of speakers to get, but I have yet to find anything locally. Did you get those new?

I had a pair of those (Sig Edition II's). One of my fave speakers! I would love to get another pair again one day.

Yes, I bought them in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia in 1988. I shipped them to the US in 1993.

Nice! I have a set of AR-19's that I've had forever. They are from the Teledyne years I think they bought out AR in late 60's or early 70's. I haven't used them in almost 20 years. I'll have to drag them out and see how they look.

They are in ok shape. All the drivers work, no pushed in mids or tweets...the dustcaps on the woofers were pushed in a little, but they came out nice with a vacuum, and some tape. the cones are a bit discolored too, not sure what to do with that? the grilles need new cloth, but the emblems were both there. And some steel wool/light sanding is necessary, then I want to restain them....after all said and done, they should be in just as good a shape as the last set.

I had the AR 3 way's...bought them in 1976 but sold them in the early 90's. My set up that I bought in 76 included a Dual turntable that I gave away in 2009 and an Onkyo receiver rated at 25 watts per channel and servo lock tuner. The Onkyo is still working perfectly in my parent's house.

The sound of the AR''s was incredible and implanted in my head . Wish they were still around.
