LOL!! I'm in charge of Music and movies at the store I work and I STILl can't believe how many people demand Full Screen- they basically crapped thier pants when they foudn out transformers, Rataouille and Spidey 3 were ONLY in Wide screen- these people are always under the impression that "the People's Heads get cut off!"-- ignorance is bliss- yet so many unhappy people
I had a woman once complain about Disney- who only releases it's animated classics in their original aspect- who mumbled under her breath "Well- I guess they won't be getting any of MY money on THAT movie"- It's too funny I know my Mom used to be anti Widescreen- but after having to have stretched out people on her TV- she finally gave in and leanred to appreciate Widescreen- now it's all she buys- even for her full screen TV's people are inherently stupid- so don't let it get you down

I don't even notice black bars anymore. If you have a widescreen TV of a decent size, I have a '42 inch, you really don't even notice it.
Although I do notice 4:3 black bars. Weird huh? |

I don't even notice black bars on a 4:3 tv anymore. When I watch a movie, I watch the movie. I don't watch the screen if you know what I mean

I have a widescreen tv and prefer widescreen movies. But I also get free cable and have gotten used to black bars on the side. But I hate stretching to fill the screen.
I never liked full screen versions of movies though because I know I'm missing part of the experience (the left and right that are cut off).
My setup:
Samsung LNS3251D 32" LCD HDTV 60 GB Playstation 3 Sony RxD7AV Dolby 5.1 Stereo system 25 Blu-Ray movies so far |

i think this problem could've been avoided if the companies only produced one type of widescreen 16:9 or w/e instead of the four or so types that exist right now. So instead of different movies using dif aspect ratios, all movies must be in the aspect ratio of (using my ex) 16:9 therefore eliminating the black bars and eliminating customer complaints and making everyone happy

The 'black bars' are only on the TV screen because it it the wrong shape for the movie (or TV show). It would be a crying shame if film directors were forced to shoot 16:9 because that's what shape TV's are. I really like the look of a 2.35:1 (or 2.40:1) theatrical presentation and am disappointed if it's only 1.85:1. Obviously a lot of directors like that look too. 2007 top 10 (so far): (Ratios as listed on IMDB) Spider-Man 3 - 2.35:1 Shrek the Third - 1.85:1 Transformers - 2.35:1 PotC 3 - 2.35:1 HP: OotP - 2.35:1 Bourne Ultimatum - 2.35:1 300 - 2.35:1 Ratatouille - 2.35:1 Simpsons Movie - 2.35:1 Wild Hogs - 2.35:1 So that's 9 out of 10! So the message from Hollywood to the 'black bar' haters is "Get over it!" - there's lots more to come. Fortunately TV screens are getting bigger so this is now less of an issue that with old 4:3 screens. |

Are there any 2.35:1 movies that are "pan and scaned" to 1.85:1? |

thats cause the tv or cable box is probably set to "stretch" the picture to fill up your screen when watching sd channels. but when you watch an hd channel it's transmitted in widescreen so by stretching it you lose some part of the image. Just switch your tv or cable box to "normal" whenever you tune in to a HD channel. If you did it right then when you switch back to an SD channel like CNN you should see vertical black bars on the sides.

I direct people that complain about the "black bars o'doom" to this website http://www.widescreen.org/examples.shtml Most people just don't fully understand why they are there to begin with. I actually printed up a bunch of cards with the URL on them so I could hand them out to a customer who was making the complaint about them.

Sadly folks like that can't be told anything at all. They have their mind made up to what they prefer. To each their own I guess. With all the storage space available I'm actually kind of surprised studio's aren't including a pan and scan version of the movie along with the OAR version.

Step 1 - Insert a fullscreen movie in.
Step 2 - A green screen pop up with a text that reads. "The following film has been formatted from it's "Original" version in order to fit your "TV screen." Apparently, most people seem to miss step 2. So they live in denial and think fullscreen give them all. Oh and by the way, I'm the new blu-guy here. Any reason why I can't make a new thread? Sorry, it's just that it says this message at the moment. Quote:
