Default Blu-ray and classical music recordings

I sent a message to ArchivMusic.com with the question if they were aware of any classical music recordings in the Blu-ray format. For what it's worth, ArchivMusic is probably the best source of classical music DVDs in the world as they cover the world in terms of the discs you can purchase.

Now, here is my initial response from ArchivMusic. This is only one opinion as he states that he has forwarded my message or their "experts".

According to my respondent, "my impression is that the Blu-ray technology is compatible with standard DVDs and that the HD DVDs are optimal".

Ass backwards, I would say.

Having said all this, is anyone out there aware of any classical recordings available or about to become available on blu-ray? If so, I would like to know. I also recognize that classical music does not appeal to most people, however there is a core group of us.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah. Classical music represents about 3% of the music industry sales. If I'm not mistaken, (please correct if wrong) Blu ray represents about 3% of DVD sales.

It will be awhile before Blu and classical are fully merged.

I have a feeling that we'll start seeing some opera soon - maybe in the next year or so. I doubt we'll see anything substantial for a long time.

I'm waiting for Fantasia (if only for the uncompressed audio) from Disney. Hopefully that will bring at least some classical music to blu-ray.

I love classical music and own more than 80 DVD titles, which were mostly released by EuroArts, the best classical music production in the world. I've also looked for Blu-ray classical music titles and haven't found any. Good news is Universal Music Group (UMG), consisting of DG, Philips, Decca & other few, supports Blu-ray exclusive while Universal Studio does HD-DVD. UMG started releasing Blu-ray titles. The first one is Elton John's "60 Live". So, I expect they will continue with classical titles too.

But my biggest concern is at EuroArts. They have real great titles. I checked their website but didn't see any sign about releasing on a HD-format. I just hope they prefer Blu-ray.

You might want to look into DVD audio while you are at it.
There is also a Blu release of the Planets with the music of Holst

Most of my classical music is on SACD which survives primarily in support of classical and a little bit of jazz music. i don't see much value in video for classical music; in fact, I have my eyes closed most of the time during live symphonic performances.

Nevertheless, I do see value in Opera on HD media; it's already on HD DVD and soon to be on Blu-ray (I hope). I'd much prefer a minimum resolution of 5.1 24/96 on my music videos and I'm highly skeptical HD DVD can deliver the audio goods while delivering high def video at the same time.
Officially: Format neutral w/ dual format player
Unofficially: Blu-ray fan
Blu-Ray - 92+PE
HD-DVD - 11

Those of you who are looking for classical music on DVD and Blu-Ray should check-out prestoclassical.com. It is, by far, the best source that I have found for classical DVD and Blu-Ray. Although they are based in London, England, items that I have ordered have arrived surprisingly quickly. Their web-site has seperate areas for DVD and Blu-Ray including new releases and future releases. There is quite a lot available on both DVD and Blu-Ray, although I only have ordered Blu-Ray, so far. Some of my favorites are ALL of the "keeping score" series by the San Francisco Symphony, my favorite of these is Symphonie Fantastique, Mousorgsky-Ravel, Pictures At An exhibition, Mahler Symphony #2 by the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and Claudio Abbado. There is much more. Unlike many others who have posted on this topic, seeing, especially in high def., the performers as they play adds a LOT to the experiance for me.
