Default Subwoofers!

Having upgraded everything else I'm now in the market for a sub. I'm leaning towards the Hsu Research VTF-3 HO Subwoofer with Turbocharger. My front L&R speakers are Axiom M80-V2s for which Axiom claims usable bass response down to 25 Hz so I'll probably be sending the LFE to both the sub and the fronts or setting the crossover to 40 Hz. Cost isn't a huge issue but I'd like to spend under $1500, less if possible. Does anyone have any experience with or thoughts on the Hus or a comparable sub I should check out?

Sounds like a freaking car model...

If you have a small to mid-sized room, it may be a little overkill.

I'm partial to Velodyne DD subs myself-- just absolutely bottomless bass that will integrate into the most delicate of systems. You might be able to swing a DD-12 on eBay for a little over $1500. The DD-15 and DD-18 are outstanding (I have a DD-18) but will run you over 2k.

Definitely worth a listen.

I have a HSU STF-3, volume a quarter of the way up and it shakes the house when it needs to.
Can't go wrong with HSU, they really know their stuff, and spend alot of R&D in developing them.
Sony PS3 80G
Sony 52" XBR5
Yamaha RX-V1800
Yamaha HTR-5890
Paradigm's Monitor 11's
Paradigm Atom
Paradigm C-350
HSU STF-3 sub

I have the HSU Research VTF3, but not with the turbocharger. It definitely can get loud and low, but so can many other subs that will sound cleaner. I absolutely like my subwoofer a lot, but I would have much rather have had a REL. They can get just as loud and low, but soooooo much smoother sounding and cleaner. The R series is a fantastic line, my father has the older Q series, which I love more than my HSU. I would definitely do a REL subwoofer. In the US go to www.sumikoaudio.net, they are the distributors in the US. They will give a list of companies that sell them.
Panasonic- TH50PZ700U, Denon AVR-3808 (Pre/Pro), B&K Reference 200.7 Amplifier, Denon DBP2010CI, Quad 22L Floorstanding, Quad L Centre, Quad 12L Bookshelf, HSU Research VTF3 Mk2 Subwoofer (all in Rosewood), All Audioquest interconnects

Yep, REL is available on this side of the pond. They're distributed by Sumiko.

If you are looking to spend under $1500, I would definitely check out SVSubwoofers. They make some pretty crazy stuff. The tube subwoofers are insane but are nearly the size of a small water heater. I am kiiiinda in the market for a subwoofer so I've been looking at these very heavily.

Sony KDL-46V3000 1080p LCD
Samsung BD-P1400 Blu-ray player
160GB PS3 (40GB SKU)
Onkyo TX-SR805 Reciever
Polk RTi70 towers/ surrounds
SVS 20-39 PC+ Subwoofer

Mackie
HRS-120 12" - $1100
SWA1801z 18" - $1300
SWA2801z dual 18" - $1800

Genelec
7050B 8" - $1100
7060B 10" - $1975
7070A 12" - $2700
7071A dual 12" - $4375

I would probably just get the hrs-120 or 7060b, those other ones are all ridiculous.
All prices from sweetwater, you might be able to barter on a hrs-120 at your local Guitar Center.
Panasonic TH-50PZ700U 50" Plasma
Yamaha HTR-5740 6.1 Receiver
DirecTV H21 CE 0x4034

Don't tell yourself that you have to spend close to your limit. Focus on the best sub at/below that amount. Is size a concern? Check out the SVS PB12-Plus/2 and SVS PB13-Ultra. Hurry, they have a sale on the PB12-Plus/2. Also, they are all available in very very sexy colors. I envy you.

To supplement your subwoofer, the Buttkicker will go down to 5Hz.

My vote is for SVS they are internet only and worth every penny. I have the end table version and they rock the house and didn't cost a ton of money. This version goes down to 16 htz and the sound is nothing short of amazing.

Did we forget to mention their solid build quality! Check out audioreview.com for feeback on all the brands that were suggested. I wouldn't worry about 11htz and below unless you wish to commnicate with whales and elephants. LMAO. Just kidding!

LOL

Agreed with the sound. I like the way you don't hear something in the movie but you sure feel it. The speaker comes in a large shipping crate and the build like you say is very good. I got the black finish and it is actually acting as an end table.

There is one scene in Spiderman 3 when the guy becomes Sandman is something you have to feel to fully appreciate. The sound is not distorted just knock your socks off or pictures off the way deep.

This is the one that I have and WOW is the price good right now. Shipping is not cheap because of size and weight but it is the best that I have heard and I checked out many subs before buying.
