Germany Heimat: A Chronicle of Germany

Studio Canal have released Edgar Reitz's Heimat: A Chronicle of Germany (1984) in Germany today.

Can any members provide information about this release? It looks to be 1.66:1, and with German options only, going by the information in the Studio Canal listing. And it looks like it is being re-released on German DVD in 1.66:1, too. The listing claims this is a Director's Cut Theatrical Version, does that mean there was a new version released theatrically in Germany?
"You might very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment."

Heimat has always existed in two versions, the theatrical and the TV version. The TV version consists of 11 parts of different lengths. The theatrical version has been divided up so it can be shown in 7 feature length parts. The TV version only exists on tape, so only the theatrical version was suitable for restoration. The restoration took five years as some of the negative had suffered damage over time. I suppose in this case director's cut just means that Edgar Reitz himself oversaw the restoration. It's not different from the earlier version.

That was a great show. I remember watching it back in the 80s in Australia

Well, In my humble opinion it's probably one of the greatest TV series ever made. Only bettered, perhaps, by Heimat II. Essential viewing. I'm really looking forward to getting this on Blu. Hopefully english subtitled versions of series 2 and 3 will follow shortly. I know German versions have been available on Blu for some time.

I have the dutch blu-ray disc, which has the same Arthaus transfer and comes as a 5 disc set. Transfer is 1080i/50p and the aspect ratio is 1.66:1, sound is German DTS-HD MA 1.0

Director Edgar Reitz states in the booklet that the transfer/restoration was made from the original 7 part, 35 mm shot, theatrical version. It looks stunning, especially the black and white images. The company that has released the dutch version is called Lumiere, they provide the belgian and dutch markets with titles usually licensed from Scandinavia, Russia, Germany or France (they released the restored version of Andrey Zvyagintsev' The Return over 2 years ago, http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Re...lu-ray/141725/) .

For some idea of the screenshots of this dutch Lumiere release see this dutch review:
