Default Hellboy 2... by Universal!

Ok So do you want the good news or the bad news first? Good? ok.

There is a Hellboy 2 being made. Its called Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. Its directed by Guillermo del Toro and stars Ron Perlman like in the first part.

The bad news?

It's being made by Universal Pictures!!!

Its supposed to come out in theaters August 1, 2008, more than a year away.

I seriously hope this war is over by THEN.
"My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."

the movie won't be released on any format until november at the earliest...

most likely early 2009...and I expect this war to be at least 'pretty much" over at that point..

Universal Studios need to make 2 major changes...

A new logo to replace the one they've been using for the last 10 years. To be frank, it's one of the worst logos out there. Nothing was wrong with the 75th anniversary logo, I thought it looked quite amazing then they ruined it with a new CGI logo. Still haven't gotten used to it to this day.

Now, the second change... go Blu... or at least go neutral.

Anyone know how long is the contract between Universal and Microsoft for HD DVD exclusive? Highly unlikely they will break the contract if there is one...

I really wonder if there is a length of contract...

MS is probably just paying them money for however long they stay neutral...but that's just my opinion...I can't believe they signed a contract for a long period of time..

lol I quite like the Universal logo...But yeah that does suck that they managed to get Hellboy 2. Hopefully they'll be neutral by that time

As much as I hate to say, but Sony is to be blamed. They were the one who wouldn't fund the sequel as they felt that it wasn't a profitable franchise despite the fact that they made a 3-disc set on DVD and just released it on the Blu-ray format.

Then they put up the rights for sale and Paramount was in talks to acquire it but then it ended up going to Universal Studios.

Figures!

I want this movie on blu-ray! Why would Sony think it's not profitable? Was the first one not profitable for them?

They didn't make a profit off it at the theatres. It had a budget of approximately 65-67 million not including the marketing costs.

It made a little over 59 million dollars in the USA. Though they did make around 40 million overseas bringing a total gross of nearby 100 million dollars. I'm not sure what the marketing costs were, but I can imagine it wasn't cheap. Many movies are marketed with a budget of $30 million and upward. So it's more than likely they did make a profit on the DVD format but it may not had been enough to warrant a sequel, at least not to Sony.

Heh

Before I bought a PS3, a movie was just a movie. Now every time I look at a movie, the first thing I do is see which studio it is from...

I'm not to hate Universal on this, whatever gets the movie made. No reason the war shouldn't be over by than anyway. If it's not, I would say neither side will win.

Default my guess :Universal on bluray before 2008....

with the sales of bluray movies going up and up every month i would have to say that hd-dvd will be dead by the end of the year, honestly the only thing keeping hd-dvd alive are those stupid promo things (buy a player and get 7 movies free)......hopefully that will end soon. but i think universal should wake up and see that more people buy bluray over hddvd and from a sales point of view they should go bluray and make start making some good $

Default Hellboy 2: The Golden Army (2008) a Universal production.

I was searching through IMDB and came across Hellboy 2. Here's what it says in the trivia:
"Revolution Studios was originally set to produce this sequel but had to pull out once Sony decided they no longer wanted to fund Revolution Studios. Sony put the rights up for sale since they felt Hellboy wasn't a profitable franchise for them. Universal felt differently and bought the rights to make the sequel immediately."

I'm bummed that this won't be on Blu-ray...at least that we know of. Here's another little interesting piece of trivia off the site:
"Peter Jackson approached Guillermo del Toro to direct Halo (2009), and even though del Toro considered it, he turned the offer down so he could direct this sequel. Also, del Toro turned down I Am Legend (2007) and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2008) for the same reason."

Those are some high profile movies to turn down. Anyone else bummed about the news?

Yeah it would be nice to see what he would do with the Potter film...not sure Halo would be the best fit for him, but I think Hellboy will be awesome.
