Default Suburbia - directed by Richard Linklater (1996)

Surprised that Linklater's underrated film Suburbia (1996) is still not even on Region 1 DVD, let alone Blu; the film is 20 years old this year.

Linklater was able to make a film about about a group of 20-something slackers who hang around a convenience store all night actually interesting. I streamed it once a while back, but the print was extremely poor.

This definitely deserves a Blu - or at least a decent DVD Region 1 release at some point.

Side-note: This Suburbia is not to be confused with the other excellent film of the same name by P. Spheeris - that was the 1984 cult classic film about a group of runaways living in an abandoned house in the L.A. area.

At this point I'd even be happy with a DVD. I bought it on iTunes in SD years ago to replace the VHS.

At one point Linklater said WB was going to out-Criterion on a DVD release, but then nothing happened as far as I know.

A dream release would have commentaries from Linklater and as much of the cast as possible, especially Ribisi, and Eric Bogosian who wrote the play.

I would love to see this on DVD or Blu someday. All I have is the VHS and the killer soundtrack. I re-watched this over the weekend. This was a big time rental for me growing up. Why has this never been released?

Because we live in an unjust world.

High five on the soundtrack, I have it too

I think the fact there are 4 posts in here and 2 of them are mine is why it hasn't been released on any disc other than LaserDisc

Yeah, it's too bad that Suburbia '96 hasn't ever been released to regular DVD, let alone Blu. It's an amazing & underrated film, but I'm not sure how many fans it has out there these days.

I agree that the Criterion Collection is a label that seems tailor-made to release this great movie.

I wonder if the soundtrack is the reason we haven't seen a home video release since the VHS days?! It wouldn't be the first time that music rights/issues have prevented a film/TV series from being released - or, at least prevented something from being released with the original soundtrack.

Wow. It looks like Warner Archives is doing a MOD DVD. Better than nothing I guess.

https://www.amazon.com/SubUrbia-Jayce-Bartok/dp/B0788XQ679/ref=sr_1_4?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1516804738&sr=1-4&keywords=suburbia

My only gripe about the soundtrack... I wish it had the Ministry song on it.

Wow - can't believe Suburbia '96 came out this week on DVD; this thread is prophetic. However, I'm disappointed that this is just a DVD for $21.

Who knows, I may still get this anyway...

My bad - I was misreading an earlier post. There's no indication that the soundtrack in the film was modified.

That being said, to make sure there are no missing/revised songs I'd have to watch an original cut of the film & then the new DVD.

If anyone gets this new Suburbia DVD & can verify that the songs haven't been modified, please post - Thanks.

After all this time, a MOD DVD. As much as I'm a physical media person, it can be purchased in HD digitally now and that seems more exciting. Cheaper too. MOD release makes me think they won't license it out. I was really hoping Criterion would get a shot since they keep adding more Linklater.

Blah.

I just saw the Warner Archive post about this. I am pissed. I thought this was a sure thing for Criterion to do.

Had to look up what an MOD DVD was. I expect that's also why it's so expensive.
