Has anyone heard any news on plans to release Mutiny on the Bounty or Lawrence of Arabia? There must be a print of "Mutiny" out there as it had a run on HDNETMovies and looked terrific.

Unfortunately, I believe Mutiny on the Bounty sold very poorly on HD DVD. I don't think Warner will be rushing to produce a Blu-ray version. Truth be told, it looked spectacular on HD DVD.

Lawrence of Arabia is on it's way. Last I heard no exact date but they hope to release it in 2008. Sony hoped to release it in 2007 but they are a doing a mammoth restoration job, so it will be something to look forward too. I guess restoration takes as long as it takes, one thing that a time line can't be easily predicted. At least Sony is putting the time and money into doing it properly and have not taken the attitude it's just good enough.

I like that. I like it when a studio takes its time with one of their bigger titles so that they can deliver a perfect DVD of a truly classic movie.
I think LAWRENCE OF ARABIA is one of the crown jewels in Columbia's library, so I'm sure that they'll do one of their best Blu-Ray editions for this one in particular. LAWRENCE and DR. STRANGELOVE are the ones that I really want to see from Columbia. I already got CE3K, so those two are the ones I'm really itching for. |

Frankly, I think that all films worthy of being transfered to Blu-ray should be treated with such care. But the corporate world doesn't work that way. Already films are being transferred to Blu-ray that weren't even worthy of being made in the first place. I hate the thought of BDs filling up a trash can.

As a David Lean fan I sure hope Doctor Zhivago gets the same care as LoA when it gets released.

Uh, just to avoid confusion, we ARE talking about the flop 60's Marlon Brando version--
Yes, we know, "Dear gods, what were they thinking?? ", and most likely, what they were thinking was that it was in widescreen, while Charles Laughton and Clark Gable weren't.(And the Brando had just gotten a fresh new restoration for the DVD.) We'd probably need a more normal example to judge by, let alone the fact that it was on HD. Hopefully, after Warner goes completely dual next January |
