Default The Day of the Jackal (1973) coming from Arrow

Quote:
US/CAN TITLE: The Day of the Jackal (Blu-ray)

A nail-biting cinematic experience and one of the greatest political thrillers of all time

Pre-order in the US via DiabolikDVD: http://www.diabolikdvd.com/product/t...arrow-blu-ray/
Release date: 25 September

In 1971, Frederick Forsyth shot to bestseller status with his debut novel, The Day of the Jackal – taut, utterly plausible, almost documentarian in its realism and attention to detail. Two years later, director Fred Zinnemann (High Noon) turned a gripping novel into a nail-biting cinematic experience.

August 1962: the latest attempt on the life of French President Charles de Gaulle by the far right paramilitary organization, the OAS, ends in chaos, with its architect-in-chief dead at the hands of a firing squad. Demoralized and on the verge of bankruptcy, the OAS leaders meet in secret to plan their next move. In a last desperate attempt to eliminate de Gaulle, they opt to employ the services of a hired assassin from outside the fold. Enter the Jackal (Edward Fox, Ghandi): charismatic, calculating, cold as ice. As the Jackal closes in on his target, a race against the clock ensues to identify and put a stop to a killer whose identity, whereabouts and modus operandi are completely unknown.

Co-starring a plethora of talent, including Michael Lonsdale (Munich), Derek Jacobi (The Odessa File) and Cyril Cusack (1984) and featuring striking cinematography by Jean Tournier (Moonraker), The Day of the Jackal remains one of the greatest political thrillers of all time.

I do too, but this is better. I was going to get the Region B release but procrastinated a bit and decided against it because people were reporting that they were no longer coming with booklets. When the Hired Hand was announced a few weeks ago, I had a sneaking suspicion this might be coming along too as they are both Universal titles.

Great flick!! The remake with Bruce Willis grossly pales in comparison to this film.

On my purchase list when it come out.

Not a bad film by any means, but I never understood why it's so highly praised in some circles. In any event, it seems like an oddly conventional choice for Arrow.

This movie is fantastic. Just watched the R2 from Arrow a couple weeks ago.

Arrow's not just a cult label you know, and it's highly praised because it's a well written, well plotted real world thriller from a time when you still had intelligent thrillers made for intelligent and educated adults. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is about the only thing along those lines that I've seen since the beginning of this century.

Default Vive la Arrow!

An all-time top 25 film for me, this is fantastic news, and on the same weekend F1 returns to France with the GP @Paul Ricard.

The only question now is what film to select as a potential double feature?

The Spy Who Came In From The Cold? Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy? The Year of Living Dangerously?

Well, yes and no. Arrow Video definitely leans heavy towards "cult" (for lack of better word), and that's who's releasing Day of the Jackal. Frankly, Arrow Academy seems like it would have been a better fit.

Here's where I'm leaning for a double feature:

Picked up the region free Aussie release sometime back. Great movie, but not sure that I am willing to double dip on it.

Arrow Academy would be fitting too, but Arrow Video have released plenty of "mainstream" titles, plus they already put this out last September in the UK so why are you even bringing this up now?

That was what I had in mind too.

Powerhouse are putting out a new release of the Odessa File in August, which would make a solid double-bill of Frederick Forsyth adaptations.

Being a backer, I really need to stop buying the UK only discs only to have them released months later. Now I have to stop myself order Heathers right away and wait it out.

I was going to pick this up but Deep Discount had documented this as a Region B release and I'm not Region Free yet.

A triple-bill it is.

All Cinema Cult releases are labeled region B, but in reality some are region free.
