Default To Atmos or not to

Because of my home situation, my sound system consists of ALL in-ceiling speakers (SpeakerCraft AIM8 Fives) for a 7.3 system.

I got off the line with SpeakerCraft and was told by a tech that I could add two wide dispersing speakers in the ceiling that would really work well for Atmos

Before I spend a ton of money for good speakers, do you think there would be any noticible difference in sound by adding Atmos speakers in the ceiling when ALL the other speakers are also in-ceiling?

I already have holes cut in the ceiling that would work well in size and placement. They were cut in years ago when trying in-ceiling passive subs (Not my best idea).

But is it even worth the effort? I have heard Yes and No. It almost seems like I should give it a try just to see.

Once Chris of Audyssey told me Heights would not work with in-ceiling speakers because they have to be higher than the main speakers. But he also said Wides really wouldn't work either. But I gambled and added Wides. To date Wides have been one of the best installation idea for sound that I have thought of.

Which makes me wonder about Atmos. Will they make better what I have???

My intuition would say no, but honestly I'm not sure.

Maybe since the other speakers will have more directionality they might sound more focused than the height speakers used for Atmos. Just give it a try

Ps I have some Polk Audio RTi6 willing to sell for super cheap before you commit to something more expensive

I decided to give it a try.

Thanks for the offer but I want to timber-match the speakers.

I talked to Best Buy today and they are willing to special order the speakers and if they do not work out, they will take them back.

At least I will find out and not always wonder.

I had the exact same question in the Spring.

In the end I thought it was quite good. The Atmos documentation states to have them at a different height however my local home theater store had it setup with all in ceiling.

I watched 5 scenes multiple times and decided that it was a good experience for Atmos. With the atmos turned off it made a difference to the feel of the movie.

Now I did a viewing with the identical scenes with speakers at different heights and I will say the experience was improved slightly.

For my new home theater I ended up putting them in the ceiling but I also added outputs on the back wall if I want to change my rears to standing speakers.

I will not be setting it up until March however I think I will give it a go first with ceiling speakers.
