United Kingdom Suspiria 4k UHD+BD Cult Films Crowd-Funder + BD+DVD

British label CultFilms announced that it plans to release on 4K Blu-ray UHD and Blu-ray the recent 4K restoration of Italian director Dario Argento's film Suspiria (1977), starring Jessica Harper, Stefania Casini, Flavio Bucci, Miguel Bosé, and Barbara Magnolfi.

Crowd-funded limited edition 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray Dual Format SteelBook Edition

Fans will have the opportunity to crowd-fund a very special limited edition 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray dual-format SteelBook (pictured) of the SUSPIRIA 4K restoration.
The crowd-funding campaign will go live on 30 October, just in time for Halloween!
This will be a limited numbered edition including a slate of specially-commissioned extras exclusive to this SteelBook release and available nowhere else in the world.
crowd-funder goes live for the UHD+BD Ltd Numbered Embossed SB tomorrow at 12.30pm UK time! Be the first to know about our early bird perks:

This special edition will be strictly limited: we will only print 950 units.
The SteelBook artwork shown here is for illustration purpose only. We will commission new and original artwork for our a specially designed glossy, embossed SteelBook!
Should we exceed our goal, we intend to create new extra features and an illustrated booklet with newly commissioned essays.

UPDATE
Thanks to your amazing support this 4K UHD/Bluray Suspiria Limited Edition is definitely going to happen!!

Stretch Goal : if with your support this campaign reaches £25,000 we will make this Limited Edition even more special! We'll add an additional disc of bonus features by filming and editing our own extra features and/or sourcing and reviving long-disappeared iconic documentaries on Dario Argento - and more depending on funding and production budget!

UPDATE 16/11/17
An update on this unique release!
We have had some enquiries regarding the Videa UHD disc and the CultFilms UHD disc, and if and how they differ.
This UHD disc of SUSPIRIA is unique: the only way to produce it was for CultFilms and the world-rights owners of SUSPIRIA, Videa, to collaborate.
UHD Blu-rays are very expensive to produce, and we believe that this is one of the only non-mainstream film to be released on UHD at this time.

While the source encode file is shared, the two discs will look different. So, you will see the CultFilms disc — which is revealed here for first time - bearing the bewitching catalogue ref ‘CULT666’! The Videa disc is different in this respect.

The disc branches off into two after an initial panel upon insertion: the CultFilms ‘version’ opens as a CultFilms disc, with an English copyright warning and the CultFilms logo, which segues onto a menu in English.

One advantage of this shared source encode for the film is that our UHD will all the audio permutations available, in English and Italian, as listed here:

- English PCM mono
- English 2.0 DTS-HD MA
- English 5.1 DTS-HD MA
- Italian PCM mono
- Italian 2.0 DTS-HD MA
- Italian 5.1 DTS-HD MA
- Subtitles switchable both English and Italian

Everything else is different - and indeed better! In your CultFilms SteelBook edition:

• The CultFilms Blu-ray is unique to CultFilms. It is a separate encode, completely authored in UK and is entirely English-language based, but also providing the alternative Italian audio.

• To date, our CultFilms Blu-ray already has more extras. If we reach our second/Stretch Goal we will have yet more extras and indeed we may have to grow to a third disc.

What you are helping fund is a unique package: we could not have made it without your funding and that is why it is your SUSPIRIA 4K!

This strictly limited edition, numbered, embossed SteelBook will not be made available in shops, unlike the Videa product which is available to the general public and yet more expensive!

We have also been asked about the exact numbers we will produce of this special edition:
We will produce no more than 1,000 units in total.
But because of the special manufacturing process (emboss etc) and the fact that some part of the packaging will be done by hand, the forecast tolerance is given at between 5% to 10%. This means we may lose between 50 and 100 units.
This is why at this point we cannot tell how many of these unique SteelBooks we will have and therefore we cannot guarantee that we will have 1,000 pristine products until we have completed the project.

So far the package will be:
• An embossed SteelBook
• Each individually numbered
• Not available to general retail shops
• One UHD disc plus one Blu-ray disc, as minimum

Plus, depending on the overall funding, hopefully, a third disc with additional extras if we hit our Stretch Goal.

We cannot THANK YOU enough for the stupendous support and the wonderful trust you have put in us. We are new to crowd-funding and we are a very small team and appreciate your kind patience with us when we’re bit quiet! As mentioned before, we’re just making sure that the project we are building for you with your support is realistically deliverable. So far we already have a unique product.. and any further funding will go into making it just that bit more special...

As Dario Argento would say: ‘Grazie e a presto!’

UPDATE 4/12/17
Now the campaign has finished, we have begun!
A massive thanks to all the backers of our SUSPIRIA SteelBook crowd-funding campaign - we have, to date, raised £33,705! Thanks to your contribution, we are able to produce this amazing limited edition of Dario Argento’s masterpiece.

With the funds secured, we are now in a position to start producing a truly unique release of this incredible film.

We have booked the authoring for the third disc and are setting dates with talent for the interviews that will appear on the extra features!

The campaign is over but it's still possible to support the pledge, as it has now gone ‘on demand’.

Thank you all again - we will have another update for you soon!

Update 20/12
We are hard at work!
Just a quick update to reply to those of you who are asking when they will be getting their Dual Edition of Suspiria. We have started the process of production and the work has well and truly begun: we have commissioned the steelbooks, we are in the process of producing the extras which we will announce once they are 100% secured ( i.e all filmed!) and the work on the booklet is also underway. We are hard at work and will provide a more detailed update in the New Year. We take the opportunity to send you our best Seasonal Wishes to all of you!

24/1/18 An update
We owe you an apology.

We incorrectly named the metal packaging where we’ll place the three discs (x1 UHD plus x2 Blu-rays) as a ’SteelBook’ and alternatively as a ’steelcase’.

We wish to apologise unreservedly if this has shown to be misleading. We can assure you that this was not intentional.

In the original pitch and perks descriptions, we intended to refer to a generic metal case and not a specific brand.

However, whilst we naturally looked at several ‘metal boxes’, we preferred the overall look and the ‘feel’ of (what is indeed) a ‘FuturePak’ ® box. We also liked the way it opens flat...

Like most things these are subjective appreciations, but many online comments mention how the FuturePak ® box ‘feels heavier, more robust’ - an impression we agree with when we handled samples: all in all FuturePak boxes

felt more like a unique object to us - and especially its 3D-embossed form which we are using to emphasise the newly commissioned artwork.

We searched far and wide for an artist and settled on Andy Fairhurst which has proved to have been the most rewarding decision! Andy’s new take on the Suspiria ballerina is simply stunning: we find it a fitting reboot for this new - and we trust definitive - edition of Suspiria.

We, ourselves, were also unhappy about the need to conceal this gorgeous artwork under a screen of CultFilms logos, we did it not to purposefully hide anything from our wonderful IndieGoGo backers, but because it was suggested as appropriate best-practice in order to protect the design (from being copied) before the manufacturing process started!

We shall soon release the artwork, front, back and inside of course as well as give you a precise description of the new, additional extras being produced exclusively for this release.. We were recently in Rome visiting Stefania Casini and others who participated in making Suspiria and we are now waiting on the availability of the last contributors whom we’ve lined up - some who’ve hardly ever talked before about their crucial involvement and impact on the look and sound of SUSPIRIA..!

We are though able to confirm a booklet with new insight from Dario’s friend - and THE Argento expert - Alan Jones.

Argento’s Suspiria is to induce fear at 400 degrees: the heat is rising!

[Show spoiler]THE RESTORATION

'I hope that you are ready...' declares Dario Argento in his personalised introduction to the CultFilms release of SUSPIRIA.

Argento filmed SUSPIRIA on some of the last of the Eastman 5247 film stock. In order to reach the deep colours he had envisioned, the director struck the original release prints using a very different Technicolor Dye Transfer process which had already become obsolete. SUSPIRIA was the last film to be released following that particular method and all subsequent prints did not adhere to Argento's original vision, with the look of the film affected dramatically.

The new 4K scan was painstakingly restored by TLE Films in Germany with that crucially distinct colour palette reinstated in accordance with Argento's original Technicolor Dye Transfer specification, using period film materials as reference.

The restorers also reinserted all missing frames which had degraded badly or were simply lost over the years, making this version of SUSPIRIA premiered by CultFilms the most complete and original looking, and finally doing justice to Argento's vision.

An important question: will this have HDR? The 4K Italian version did not and I believe it was limited to the Rec. 709 color gamut as well. If that’s the case the only upgrade here, in terms of quality, would be additional resolution and possibly better compression, but not better colors or contrast.

Also, have there been any details regarding audio? The Synapse version will feature the original 4.0 soundtrack. It’d be great if this one could include it, or at least a version of that, even if it’s encoded in stereo surround.
Setup:

The crowd funder is on Indiegogo rather than Kickstarter. So that means no goal although there is the target. The fund raiser gets to keep the money even if only £1 pledged they don’t need to hit the target. It also means that your card is charged when you make the pledge as it’s a firm commitment rather than at the end of the fund raising period.

I presume this is because they said in the main Suspira thread here that they will press the number of UHDs they need based upon pledges so no minimum or maximum.

The Italian uhd includes a decent stereo English track which wasn't on the Italian bluray. Plus it has the Cultfilm logo so apart from some additional extras it will be interesting to see how different this disk will be.

Is this from the same master as the upcoming American steelbook? I may have to go for this, instead; like the idea of getting a UHD for this one.

No. It's a different take on the restoration from a separate company. Synapse did the US remaster, TLE Films in Germany did the Euro version.

No it’s from the same source as the Italian UHD, and is almost certainty the same disk as that is English friendly. You can find comment on the Italian disk in the Suspiria thread here or elsewhere online.

Excuse me if I've gotten the wrong idea, but why would any BD watcher/collector want to fund a DVD release, even as part of a dual format release?

I'm pretty sure that people without Blu-Ray players are welcome to fund it as well. Some people who are DVD only will buy dual-format releases as a way of future proofing, others buy them if there's no individual DVD release. I'm sure there are plenty of people who haven't made the jump to BD yet who may want this release, and so they may also be putting money in to it.

I am from Germany, what would be the added value over the German 4K disc? I dont have a UHD Player (yet).

- Exclusive Extras
- a Steelbook packaging (whose final design is not known yet)

Something else?

Well, the extras are listed in the first post.

I'm not sure about this when I think about it. Usually with such campaigns you are paying up front to bring something to the market that isn't available.

I mean, if People don't want the steelbook just buy the German BD. It sounds like it is going to be the same scan etc. Doesn't it?

At this stage, I suspect that the amount of people still on DVD only that would be monitoring and pursuing a new DVD release of Suspiria (which would be future proofed anyway, so long as BD players can replay DVDs) is a tiny amount. Even just in relation to BD market.

Dual Format editions are surely meant to tempt people to eventually adopt the new format and upgrade their equipment with a compatible disc all ready to play on it.
