Default Mask (1985) Peter Bogdanovich - Elephant Films 1/17/2018

Mask (1985). Directed by Peter Bogdanovich. Eric Stoltz, Cher, Sam Elliott, and Laura Dern star. Looks like it includes both the Theatrical and Director’s Cuts per the database listing on this site. For the uninitiated, there are different soundtracks for each cut. A Bob Seger soundtrack is on the Theatrical, and a Bruce Springsteen soundtrack is on the Director’s Cut.

If anyone picks this up and can post a review, it’d be much appreciated. I’ll keep an eye out for professional reviews as well, and will link them here if I see any.

EDIT: **The UK is getting a Blu-ray too, but only the Director’s Cut is indicated for that listing.

Nice announcement! I'd rather have the theatrical cut since I'm more of a Bob Seger fan over the Boss. But would also welcome both versions regardless. Thanks OP!

Very excited for this release...but hesitating to see what reviews will be like...just glad this film is seeing the light of day on Blu-ray.

As soon as I get to watching it I’ll make sure to let you know. Work gets busy so I can’t promise how soon but I’ll try . I also try to hold out on opening releases like this until screencaps are posted but I may give in and watch it early. It Only shipped a week ago so I haven’t even received it yet. I’m sure it’ll be beautiful though. Each cut has it’s own disc and I think they’re both BD-50s plus France usually does top notch transfers

Two member opinions have been posted on Amazon.fr. It's not much to go on, but neither are ringing endorsements.

Quote:

Contrary to what is indicated on the blu-ray cover, the director's cut version does not have any French audio. The film is in French subtitled VO. However, it remains a very good film, moving and superbly interpreted by Cher and Eric Stoltz in the role of Rocky.

Sorry for getting back to you guys so late I was waiting for screencaps to be posted and nothing yet so I opened the set and checked out the discs. Pretty sure both of these cuts are 1080p MPEG-2 encoded transfers that were taken from previous dvd releases. I even checked back on my directors cut dvd and it looks to be the exact same source that was used. Underwhelming to say the least.

And you did watch this release for yourself and did not just copy what was said on retro HD in the review for Isadora? http://retro-hd.com/tests/blu-ray/2560-isadora.html asking bc your words are identical to what was said so now I’m curious if you actually saw the transfer. I may reach out to Elephant films about this to be honest because I feel cheated. This is not a blu-ray! Something is off...

Thanks for the review, Jezelle. This is disappointing. If it actually is MPEG-2 encoded, do you think it’s just a lowly DVD upconvert? Or, is it at least a little better than that??

I think it’s just a lowly dvd upconvert. I’d like to know what everyone else thinks it is. It’s like there’s no detail at al, a lot of digital noise too, and the picture is dull and cloudy.

Never heard anything back from elephant films on Facebook in regards to this transfer. funny because when this release was first announced we had communicated a couple of times about the quality and whether or not the subs would be forced and I got responses right away.

And I’m not even that picky when it comes to transfers, I’m normally the one thinking ppl are being overly dramatic, I’ve just never seen anything like this before be called blu-ray. I even thought the first blu-ray release of Carrie (MPEG-2) looked great despite what a lot of other ppl had said so I can def see the good if it’s there but with this release it’s difficult. I just hope we get some in depth reviews at some point
