Hands off the compression button, Music Industry!
Hands off the DNR button, Blu-Ray producers!

Just because all discs are region free doesn't mean a domestic release wouldn't be much cheaper to purchase.

Unless a movie was literally shot on a potato then it's surprising just how much a 4K HDR presentation can bring to the table.
That's good to know. But you mean in terms of compression, or things like detail and colour grading?

All three. Just because something was shot in 1080p doesn't mean you're seeing every last pixel of it on Blu-ray because of the scaling needed to turn a 2K DI into the consumer 1080p frame size, and the whole point of something being shot in RAW as you noted is that colour timing decisions are not baked in, think of RAW as like digital camera negative where the look is ultimately confirmed in post.

They shot RAW log 4:4:4 10-bit on Zodiac so they captured chroma resolution at a far better subsampling rate (that is to say, none, it's full resolution chroma because of the Viper's three-chip CCD which isn't a Bayer array like most digital cameras in use today) versus 4:2:0 consumer video and had a higher bit depth to play with as well, that being directly related to the amount of dynamic range you can capture.

So a 4K upscale of Zodiac would have the potential for greater dynamic range and colour gamut, and sharper spatial, temporal & chroma resolutions as well.

Thanks for the explanation, Geoff, I had been wondering for a while. I am familiar with RAW process on stills, now I understand more this aspect and indeed 1080p is not even a full 2K.

It'd be interesting to see if the minor crushing, which sporadically affects night scenes on blu-ray, would be present on UHD.
I never understood if that was source-related, or due to disc compression.

Any news on a North American release? I have this sinking feeling all international releases will be canceled like the Blu-ray was nearly a decade ago...

I wish they would release it on standard Blu-ray too.

Was "Dragon Tattoo" also shot 4:4:4 but in 5K?

I would like to think so, but with the absence of a notication from Sony seems pretty unlikely ☹️

Why can't they just do it as a Best Buy exclusive like A Few Good Men and Groundhog Day (also Sony titles) and if doesn't sell well scrap it for wide release. I would hate to have been teased this is upcoming only for it to get cancelled. Hoping this still is happening!

At this point, I'll be happy if it gets released anywhere, as long as it has the English audio included. I'd rather import than never get it.

Will we get a US release though? Does this mean one is likely?
