Default Del Toro & Tolkien?

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/hobbitnews.php?id=41329

Could Guillermo del Toro be the next director for the Hobbit movies? Interesting choice. I like his style, and I think it might work for the Hobbit as long as Jackson overlooks everything. I know it will not be the same, but it looks promising to me.

And if this is in the wrong place, feel free to move the thread mods.

That'll be one dark, fantastic looking film.

Aye, del toro gets my seal of approval - Pans Labyrinth is one my favourite films ever. No doubt about it, he'd do a great job.

I was actually thinking about this recently...who I would like to direct the Hobbit movies. I want Peter Jackson to continue on...but if anyone was to take his place...damn Del Toro is a good replacement.

I sure hope he directs both.
Looking at the new Hellboy II trailers, I can't wait to see that! I think this might be a great move for the Hobbit. He seems just as dedicated to the sources as Jackson, and the two together will make a great film!

He's too busy dreaming up Hobbit 2: Return of Smaug - A Movie based upon the Video Game "Hobbit 2 - WTF?".

Its true. The hobbit is far lighter than the LOTR Trilogy. I hope they take this into account. I don't want to see a extremely dark Hobbit film. That would be a horrible movie as an adaption to the book. Although there are moments in the book that are dark (gollum / spiders) and I am sure Del Toro can spice those up.

There's a reason why it's such a cheerful book.

Haven't seen Pan's Labrinth, so I can't comment on that director. However, I would really like to see the Hobbit movie distinguish itself from LOTR. I fear that Jackson will place far too much emphasis on the ring rather than the journey to Smaug. The ring was only a plot point in the Hobbit. It was not a centrally important item. What do you guys think?

I'm still hoping that Jackson will decide to direct. I want continuity between The Hobbit and LOTR.

I think that as long as Jackson is directly involved in the movie, even if he does not direct, he will make sure there is a significant amount of continuity. Yes it may be a little different, but I feel that anyone who is willing to take on this immense job will take into account the details and the vision and the hard work that Jackson put into LotR.
I would still rather have Jackson direct the Hobbit, but if not, better that someone like Del Toro does it, who shares a similar style.

Couldn't agree more. Emphasis needs to be on the journey itself and the many side adventures along the way. Sure you want Gollum and the ring as part of it but just do a grand old fun adventure story and keep all the parts that people want to see... Trolls, Spiders, Wargs, Eagles, Beorn, etc. Do not make a "dark" story out of this.

Del Toro directing just took the pain away from my stomach that hearing Jackson wasn't directing gave me.
