Exclamation Tips, Tricks and Fixes

DISCLAIMER: If your PS3 is still under the 1 year warranty then your first step should always be to contact Sony before opening your PS3.

Well this thread will be dedicated to helping others with their issues with their PS3. I'll be updating the first post with different circumstances that people face and then a fix for it.

I hope that others will post in here with their different issues as well as fixes so I can update it as I do not know everything there is to fixing a PS3. Even if you do not have a fix for your issue, you can still post in here and I can leave your issue on the board with no fix and hopefully someone here can help you with it.

List of Resolved Issues with the PS3

__________________________________________________ ___________

Your PS3 is now not reading any Blu-ray discs, but all other disc formats are playing normally. You keep on restarting your PS3, but it appears to not be working and sometime it does play Blu-ray discs, but it freezing a couple of minutes into it and it happens with every Blu-ray disc.

I want to upgrade my hard drive, but I do not know how or which one to get.

Backing up your information, you can go to the System Settings and select Backup Utility. Make sure that you have a external device connected with sufficient space. To just save your Saved Game files, you can hit on the file and select Copy.
If you are using an external hard drive, then it has to be formated to FAT32 specs or else it will not be recognized.

When you do a full system backup for your PS3, it will copy over Copyright Protected files as long as its done on the same PS3.

Also something that NARMAK discovered when attempting to replace his hard drive was that he was getting an error message: The system software cannot be run correctly. Press the PS button to try to restart the system...

When I touch the Eject button nothing happens. First test to see if you can eject the disc via the XMB, if that works, but the button doesn't than its a button issue.

The little metal, springy thing (underneath the plastic top case) that makes contact when you push the touch sensitive button was bent backwards. it's so tiny that i hadn't noticed it. the good thing is, since the power button operates with the same mechanism, i had something to compare it to, and that's how i finally noticed the problem. - by av8tr10178

Your Blu-ray disc drive will not eject the disc or it will not accept discs.

Video Demonstrating an Operational PS3 Disc Drive - by Marine Mike
You have three components that are affecting your issue.

1. You have the white arms on top that lift and drop the disc onto the spinner with a magnetic disc that rests ontop on them. Make sure that they are in their natural resting position and then place the magnetic disc on them.
2. You have the two grey arms with grey attachments that pull the disc in and push out. Its possible that they are 'not on track'. Therefore move them gently to see if they move freely or are stuck. If they are stuck, gently lift them and move them in the circular motion until they are back on track and can move freely on their own.
3. The black flap on the mouth of the disc drive. It has a metal clip that keeps it open and close. Its very easy for this to come off so make sure that its connected.

__________________________________________________ ___________

Your PS3 will not recognize any of your controllers even if you plug them into the PS3.

Turn off your PS3 by holding down the power button on the PS3. Then after its shut down, flip the switch on the back. Wait 1 minute and turn it back on.

__________________________________________________ ___________

What's the best tool to remove the dust from the inside of the PS3?
The best tool to use would have to be a vaccum cleaner as specified in the PS3 manual that comes with the PS3. However, if you are going to open your PS3 to clean it, I recommend using canned air with strategic aiming in order to blow the dust away from the PS3 insides.

__________________________________________________ ___________

When you turn on your PS3, it results to default Video and Audio settings.

This happens when you hold down the power button for 10 seconds (until it beeps) on the actual PS3 while its turn off (red light). To fix this, when you turn it on, just hit the button briefly.

__________________________________________________ ___________

You are looking to save room on your hard drive and you need to know what to and not delete.

It is okay to delete your files in your 'Game Data Utility' folder as thats used for disc installs, Game Updates/Patches, and Downloadable Content (DLC), all of which can be reinstalled and/or redownloaded. Also its okay to delete downloaded PSN games as you can redownload them to your PS3 through the PSN store.

Now the files in your 'Saved Data Utility' and 'Memory Card Utility' should not be deleted, but backed up on a weekly basis.

__________________________________________________ ___________

How many times can I redownload an item from the Playstation Store?

There is no limit to how many times you can redownload from the Playstation store, except that it can only be up to 5 different PS3s. - Shin-ra

__________________________________________________ ___________

Known issues that currently are without a fix.
Please comment in this thread or send me a PM if you have a solution for any of these unsolved mysteries!
-When you turn on your PS3 without it a disc it thinks that there is already a disc inside.
However there is a workaround for this and that is when you first turn on your PS3 insert a disc. Also when you turn off your PS3 make sure that you leave a disc in it.

Is there any fix for the purported "Yellow light of death?"

Fortunately, I haven't suffered anything like that, but it doesn't sound good.

Great job! Give this man a gold sticky, and put it on the refrigerator!

Once someone reports here that they are having it, I can definately try to troubleshoot it with them.

I bought my 60GB in Nov 06 but still have extended warranty till this Nov. I hope if I have any problems they will be after the warranty expires because I would rather replace the laser for example myself then trust someone else with my beloved PS3.

These guides are a definitive resource.

Thanks,

Brian

Well the best (safest) tool to use outside of your PS3 to remove dust is a vaccum cleaner.

Now if you open your PS3, the best tool for me at least is canned air as I am literally pushing out the dust compared to using it closed as to where you are just blowing dust around inside of it.
