Default Apple: Blu-ray-equipped Macs currently tracking for February

Quote:
While Sony is working feverishly to secure every Blu-ray drive it can for the PlayStation 3, sources report talks with Apple have the computer maker scheduled to receive the first Blu-ray drives for Macs in February.
advertisement

Details beyond that timetable are vague at this point, including whether systems will be announced with the new drive that month, pre-announced in January for a later release, or simply be added to manufacturing for an announcement later in the first quarter. Also unknown is whether the new drive will rely on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard for out-of-the box support, or whether an update adding support for the drive will be released for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.

The first Macs with Blu-Ray drives slated for February...
OSX Leopard slated for a spring release...
Does it sound like "the perfect storm" a-brewin'?

Why would I need a Blu-ray or HD DVD drive in a Mac Pro?

Remember Thinksecret hasn't been the same since Apple sued the college kid. They said the Red (www.red.com) camera was going to be $200k. I don't know what's going on their but it ain't the same site with great scoop like it was.

Until DVD Studio Pro 5 comes out hopefully with Blu-ray support adding a drive is adding expense. Mac Pro's hold 3TB of storage so backup is not that much of an issue.

Just trying to make logical sense of this.

I think it is possible to install the software on the Mac when it is released, enabling the drive

Of course they could be planning to add the hardware with no intention of ever using but that would be silly now wouldn't it

But if you have a HDCP video card and display and have Windows installed, and add a Blu-ray drive, can't you play BDs now with the software windows BR players?

The logic is this: Whit this step Blu-Ray WINS in the Personal Computers world!
With PCs because of the ~15 drives and the capacity
With MACs because of the Apple decision.

We should wait to see what will happen with the games consoles and the movie industry.
I think that the BEST games console and the HUGE support do its job! What do you think now?

Well I think definitely Apple is going to support Blu-ray in 2007. I just question whether they will do so before NAB 2007 where they will roll out the next generation Final Cut Studio.

I'm excited about HD authoring nonetheless. I hope they have AVCHD support as well for the new Sony and Panny HD camcorders.

This was expected at MacWorld, instead Jobs announced AppleTV and their intention on pulling a Microsoft and concentrating on digital download content. I was disappointed as well, I was going to get a Mac laptop with Blu-ray, instead I ended up with a Sony.

www.macrumors.com which seems to be the most reliable of mac insider info sites points to an event later this month (or possible early March) for the MacBook Pros. Although it is a long shot that Blu-ray would be included then IMHO. Watchers generally do expect a Blu-ray option, though, later or mid- year perhaps?

I just don't see it happening, but I'd be ordering a new MBP if it did.

I can tell you that I was able to get an external Blu-Ray drive to work via BootCamp to Windows XP, a Lite-On drive, and a SATA->USB adapter. I posted on another thread about this in this forum.

Default Apple: Blu-ray-equipped Macs currently tracking for February

I'm sure the whopping 3% market share that Apple enjoys will tip the scales in Blu-Ray's favour.
