Default Can I play Blu-ray movie on my PC

Good Day

My PC has Intel Q6600 CPU, 2GB RAM, Nvidia8800 GTX graphic card, a Dell 3007WFP monitor (only 1 DVI in). A couple of months ago I bought a Pioneer BDC-S02. It could not play blu-ray movie. My PC was set at 2560x1600 resolution. The error was "cannot play at this resolution". I lowered the resolution to 1920x1080, 1280x720 and even 800x600 - still no go. I asked the Dell forum and people said that although Dell 3007WFP supported HDCP, the DVI dual link was still unable to deliver 1920x1080 to the monitor. There was no video card that could do it. I was very disappointed and returned the Pioneer player.

Now I found this forum. Can people advise me if I can play blu-ray movies on my PC at 1920x1080p or do I have to buy a video card with HDMI output and upgrade to another PC monitor with HDMI input?

Thanks

Ray

HDMI is DVI, same thing just with audio.

I believe the problem you had was that while the 8800 is HDCP complaint it isn't compliant when using both DVI's(or some arn't). Can you hook your monitor up with only 1 DVI? I know you might not get the massive 2500+ resolution with 1 but if you can set it up to play in 1920*1200 you should be able to play. Try Powerdvd Ultra. I personally only have a monitor that's 1920*1200 so I can't give you any for sure's sorry.

As soon as possible, make sure you have the latest Nvidia drivers for your 8800. Next, if you're using a dual monitor setup, make sure it's not set to clone both displays; that fouls up the HDCP protocol once you start the player software. Only one monitor can get the feed.

When you're in the Nvidia software, it will allow you to select HDTV output, and the resolution (which you did) but the latest drivers say HDTV - NOT simply the resolution (1920x1080p or whatever). This will definitely make sure that your card is talking HDCP.

Finally, if you try this again, and are using the bundled PowerDVD Ultra, make sure it's patched - lots of patches dealing with this and other Blu-Ray issues have come out in the last three months - and remember, some movies still have problems. But first, try the latest Nvidia drivers, you'll see a big difference in the setup from when you last tried it, I bet.

Good luck, you're not the first person who had a fistfight like this.

Unfortunately you're moving too fast to return your BD drive.
As somebody suggest up there, unplug one DVI cable to give you the 1920x1200 resolution.

It's worth adding that Weez_Dawg's comment is certainly applicable to Cyperlink/Powerdvd, as well. Powerdvd does have performance issues, and won't play some movies at all. See the following threads for more info:

Default Help!

Hia, this is my first post here, hi all!

I am having major problems playing BD, here is the problem.

I bought an LG h20l GGW bd drive, thinking it would play on my 8800gtx + dell 3007wfp rig, to my dismay it did not. Now although all my movies play, they have are NOT HD quality. The picture is sort of fuzzy, as though i was playing an old VHS! I tried fiddling with powerdvd and even bought an 8600gts but neither has fixed this quality problem.

updated firmware, nvidia drivers to 169.25, powerdvd to 37.30.

Is it the settings in powerdvd? I have tried fiddling for HOURS to no avail, or could it be my drive? Any help will be MUCH appreciated!

In my opinion ,I believe the problem you had was that while the 8800 is HDCP complaint it isn't compliant when using both DVI's(or some arn't). Sony officially announced its BWU-100A product at its "Experience More 2006" event in Sydney yesterday, all the while acknowledging that there's significant room for improvement before the product is viable for integration into media centre PCs.Vincent Bautista, Sony's product manager for data storage, told CNET.com.au that due to copy protection issues and lagging software development, the drive will only play user-recorded high-definition content from a digital camcorder, and not commercial movies released under the BD format.

a 9600gt would be better for blu ray! if you look on the back of a nvidia box it shows that 8800gtx and others in that range don't fill the bar for maximum blu ray performance!

Default my ati card has the dvi using the hdmi converter connector.

my ati card has the dvi using the hdmi converter connector. i tried to send the bluray signal from the pc blueray player to my bigscreen using the hdpc compliant hdmi port, but powerdvd advisor states that it is not compliant and doesn't recognize the bigscreen. the pc monitor plays bluray just fine. i wonder if dvi connections are not hdcp compliant , thus passing on that problem when converted to hdmi to the secondary monitor(..,ie the big screen) i really bought the lg burner , so i could watch bluray on the big screen and the joy of bluray burning.

any ideas? lg and mitsubsi can't seem to give the answers that work

The DVI to HDMI setup should work. You just won't have audio to the monitor.

Angry powerdvdjunk

I bought a blu-ray drive for my PC in 2010, it came with PowerDVD 7.3. It played a few movies, then after the 5th one it would not work, showing a message I needed to upgrade. I was fuming! I got powerdvd 9 and it would not work, so I got even madder and got power dvd 10 ultra. It worked, but I sold my pc online and went to Australia for 6 months and when I got back it took me a while to get another PC. I got one from Craigslist with a blu-ray player in it, but am unable to download my powerdvd 10 that I purchased even though they have a record of it. This is so much worse than DVD I am sorry it succeeded in taking over.
