Default Onkyo S3500: Calibrate or Upgrade?

Im currently running an Onkyo S3500 5.1 in a 13x21 apartment living room (sitting about 12 away from the TV/front 3 speakers) and am having trouble hearing dialogue out of my front channel. I bought the system a few years back as an easy, budget HTiB so Im still using the stock speakers. When I try to calibrate, the test tones are so quiet that they barely register.

Ive been getting a bit fed up and saw some appealing deals on entry-level receivers (ex: Onkyo TX-NR555/TX-NR656, Yamaha RX-V581BL). Curious if these or any other models are recommended for that sub-$400 price range if they would help solve some of my issues (perhaps its more speaker related).

Of course, the issue could just be with me and Im not competently calibrating the existing system. These newer receivers, however are looking like a nice half-step upgrade with 7.1, wireless, built-in calibration, etc.

Really appreciate any input.

Thanks for the link, I had looked there a little but was drawn to B&M stores so that I could test some systems out.

Turns out that was a good thing because the Yamaha was far and away the better sounding, easier to setup, straight up nicer system.

I'm now deciding between that RX-V581 and two Denons: X1300W or S920W. Great prices on A4L (the same price or less than I paid for the V581), plus more inputs and Audyssey (though I've been happy with the YPAO setup). I like the S920W for the extra inputs/outputs, but I'm wondering if it's worth the extra $20 vs the upgraded Audyssey, higher end build quality, and future Dolby Vision support on the X1300W.

I'm also concerned that I may be losing some of the nice features I've seen on this Yamaha, namely dialogue adjustments/lifting without having to boost the center channel, and the MusicCast app.

Any thoughts?

Hi Karma,

Before running out and buying a new system, try to do a couple of things first (I have experience with Onkyo AVRs)...

First -- can you tell me what each of your speaker dB levels are at?
5.1:
ONKYO TX-SR605B - oppo BDP-83 - SONY KDS-50A2020 SXRD
Mains: polkaudio RTi12 - Center: polkaudio CSi30 - Surrounds: SpeakerCraft Pre-Installed In-Ceiling - Sub: polkaudio PSW350 - Auralex Acoustics SubDude - MONSTER PowerCenter HT700

2-CHANNEL:
ONKYO TX-8555 - marantz CC4001 - TASCAM CD-RW900SL PROFESSIONAL - Numark CDMIX 1 PROFESSIONAL
Infinity BY HARMAN PRIMUS P363BK - audio-technica AT-LP120 PROFESSIONAL -
Bell'O AT423T Audio Tower
