Default Q1 BD sales figures: 3.8 million units sold

Source: Reuters/Hollywood Reporter

Quote:
[...]
In the first quarter this year, 4.9 million next-gen movies were sold, 3.8 million of which were Blu-ray. That's half of the 9.8 million copies of 536 different titles that have been sold in the U.S. since the inception of Blu-ray and HD DVD.

I think the posters on this board accounted for at least 3.2 million of those sales.

I've bought 22 Blu-Ray's since February. I've purchased more Blu's at one time than I ever have purchased DVD's. They're growing and taking over my shelf space. I love the cases, so I don't want to take them out and put them in a mass case.

But this is great. DVD's will soon die off and we can get our Caddyshack and our Sleepless in Seattle in Blu-Ray too!

The analyst figures that early Blu-ray adopters eventually will average about six to 10 titles apiece.
Who have they been talking to? Most people around here have 50-300 titles. That has to more than make up for those with only 1!

No offense, but I think your estimates are pretty overprojected. IMO, there are barely 50 Blu-ray titles worth owning as of right now. I do agree that I see a lot of people with large collections on here, but that's probably because I see it advertised in their signature. You don't see people advertising 1-3 movies in their sig - that's pointless. Maybe on this forum people are averaging 20-50 movies... that's my guess. And yes, that does take into account the people with 300+ BDs (though I would guess that's only maybe 10-20 people here). To put things in perspective, I barely own 100 DVD movies... and that's in 8 years of collecting.

Maybe your average hardcore enthusiast is going to have a couple hundred titles already, but that demographic is a small small percentage of the early adopter community. People on Blu-ray.com also represent the more enthusiastic of the early adopters, so I would expect them to average more movies.

So how many "I Am Legend" BDs were sold on the first week? Does anyone know? (I guess it's the best-seller high-def so far this year)

Thanks for posting all these numbers Grubert, with your posts in the Actual units sold thread I was able to figure out last week approximately how many were sold this year 351% increase of 830,000 is 3,743,300 (i got close).

So YTD for Q1 BD:HDDVD should be about 77.5:22.5

I don't know how many discs I Am Legend sold but we know that as of 3/16 BD sold 3 million discs so from 3/17-3/31 BD sold around 700K.

Thats very nice, glad to see BD taking off. I really wish places like Best Buy would get with reality and stop trying to think people are going to buy Blu's for 34.95. If they were anywhere near Amazon prices I would probably buy most of them there, but they are not and I have purchased all but 2 of my Blu's from Amazon.
Sony 46" XBR-6 LCD.
Sony PS3 (80 gig) - Primary Blu-ray player.
Sony 720 7.1 receiver.
Polk Audio RM-6550 5.1 Speakers. (Temporary)
40 Blu-ray movies and growing.

I think it was around 150,000 copies. It's definitely the top seller of 2008. I think National Treasure 2 will have a large debut also.
