Default PS3 Restore and format options

Hi all!

I was wondering, what is the difference between the "restore ps3" option and the "format utility" option? Why would you want to use either of these options?

Thanks!

It reloads the hard drive to its original state when it was brand new. Therefore you'll have to redownload updates and so on, you don't 'lose' the operating system persay. Now if you have Linux installed on it like myself, I'll lose that completely and have to repartition and install it.

Ah, so the XMB still stays there? But when would you format?

Format Utility wipes the harddrive (or inserted Memory Stick, Secure Digital (SD) Card or Compact Flash Card if your PS3 has the slots).

Restore Default Settings resets all the XMB settings back to their factory defaults.

Restore PS3 System does both.

The System Software is stored on separate flash memory.

-You have a lot of stuff downloaded onto it and you just want to clean it up quickly.
-Run into unforseen issues that recommends a formating.
-Install an operating system (Linux) that doesn't run properly and need to delete it or just want to have it uninstalled.
-Trade it (As someone else already mentioned)
