Default Godzilla fans (Toho ones)

I was a huge Godzilla fan growing up and I had most of the Toho Godzilla movies on VHS. Last year when I got married/moved out I somehow lost/threw away my entire collection, so I decided I want to start getting them all on DVD. Does anyone a) have a comprehensive list of all the Godzilla movies on DVD and b) are there any box sets worth getting. I say that because most box sets I've found seem to be a random out of order mess of movies, some of them even including the dreadful Matthew Broderick mess thrown in with the Toho ones.

Anyway, any other Godzilla fans here that can point me in the best direction?

I believe the Godzilla with Matthew Broderick is supposed to come out on BD sometime this year. My fantasy (well, at least ONE of them) is for TOHO to commission THX to restore all of the classic 'Zillas, and release them on BD. My favorites are: Ghiddrah The Three Headed Monster, King Kong vs Godzilla, and Destroy All Monsters. The 1990's Godzilla movies did nothing for me. However, Godzilla 2001, Godzilla vs Megaguris and Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (the newest one), are some of my favorites. Among all of the Toho films, I also like Rodan. All of these films are available on DVD here in the USA. One that is not on commercial DVD is War of the Gargantuas.

Simply search Amazon.com for all your Godzilla needs (on oldray DVD). It is doubvtful that classic Toho Godzilla will ever make it to Blu-ray in pristine (restored) video and audio quality.

Long live Godzilla.

If you're OK with standard-DVD, believe this's what you're looking for:
--> (point)
The originals, on Weinstein boxset (w/dual language, restoration and commentary), including the Burr-free original--
Plus a few Sony's that paved the way for "true" bilingual/restored versions, namely Son of, Sea Monster and Smog Monster...
Anything else is still in cheap condition right now.

(Oh, and for those who still haven't seen "Final Wars" yet, the revenge Grudge Match we'd all been hoping to see--
Only Bambi had a shorter fight.)

Yeah that boxset is THE way to go for the originals. They do an excellent job. The Sony releases on the later ones are good too. You can get them in the Godzilla DVD collection 7 pack which also includes the 1998 version but don't let that stop you because the others are very good although I believe one of them is p&s for some reason. Don't forget about "King Kong vs Godzilla" while your at it.

In order to get these in packs, you can go this route:

Films 1,2,4-6,10,15: The Godzilla Collection

Films 18,19,21-26 + American Godzilla: Godzilla DVD Collection 7-Pack

You would still need 3,7-9,11-14,16,17,27 and 28.

The above list is pretty accurate. Had to go back and check my collection and database to find it.

All Monsters Attack - AKA Godzilla's Revenge (1969) was one I had listed differently but same movie

Sony had started doing some of the later ones before the Classic Media/Weinstein restorations (which came after the uncut-Godzilla 50th-anniversary re-release), which explains why Gigan, Ebirah, Hedorah and Minilla all got Sony releases--
But still widescreen and restored print. (Especially for "Sea Monster", which's been languishing in the Public Domain gutter all this time, and now looks as good as new.)

The commentaries on the CM/Weinstein releases are worth listening to, btw:
The "vs. Mothra" commentary digs up interviews with the original actors to talk about the days of 60's foreign-film dubbing (and just why they did that weird "clipped" voice on purpose), while G3HM's talks about the new change of bringing jewel-robbery and alien-invasion plots into the canon.

I think Gozilla vs. Megalon #13 has been released in region 1 dubbed as part of the MYST vol. 10 box set, though it has been recalled due to licensing issues. You can still get it through ebay for about ~$100.

Er, think you mean MST3K version, with heckling added--
Not "the MYST version", unless it has Godzilla collecting blue pages to battle Cirrus and Ackanar at the lighthouse...

(...Am I too old, btw?)

The reason Megalon was on MST3K, like "Sea Monster", was, it was public domain at the time--
Unlike Sony's GvtSM, however, it's STILL public domain--You won't have any problem finding Megalon copy, but you'll have a search finding a good copy...GZ only makes a cameo in it anyway.

#3 "King Kong vs. Godzilla" is actually anamorphic widescreen.

Having just rented "Hedorah" (aka "Smog Monster"), it's also worth noting that since the American and Japanese cuts are different (and to avoid paying royalties to UPA), Sony does its own in-house dubs on their restored/uncut five films, while the Weinstein versions include the entire 60's American Intl. version separately on the same disk--

Which means that on Sony's GvH, they didn't bother to redub the psychedelic "Save the Earth" song, and we hear all the Japanese songs in their original form.
