Silent Hill on Blu-ray...why all the hate??

To tell you the truth, I am just stunned that people found silent hill to look bad on bluray. Its one of my favorite movies, so i decided to RENT it at blockbuster on blu to see if its really as bad as everyone on this site says it is. I put the disc in and my friends and I were blown away at how great the picture quality is. it is very sharp, colorful and spot on. I found no flaws. It was probably one of the better transfers I have seen for a horror movie.

Not only is it good creepy movie, Its the PCM soundtrack that impressed me, alot of use of the rears and overall sound.

silent hill got a pretty good review from HDD. 4 stars for video and 5 for audio. blu-ray.com hasnt done a review but from what ive seen i was also impressed with the title. prblem with the title is most parts of the movie are very dark and black and you need a LCD that can handle blacks or it will look pretty crappy

The only reason I loathed it is because of the lack of extras.. which suck.

Other than that, its a five star movie, and top notch video and audio.

I concur, the only reason I'm still holding onto my DVD copy is the lack of extras. Anyone know if the German import has any of the special features? Typically, I try to avoid the double-dip (or triple-dip in this case), but I bought my blu used over a year ago for $10, so I won't be out too much, and I've definitely gotten my moneys worth.

I have the US version and the German import but I haven't tried to view the extras on the import. Most of the time I don't bother trying b/c I can't read the menus and sometimes the extras on the imports don't work (on region A players even if the movie does).

I'll try it now to see if I can tell what it has for the special features (if anything).

Edit: Don't think it does. Looks like scene access is the only thing it provides.

The import has a much cooler looking artwork I know that for sure -_-V

Thanks for the heads up. I'll just wait for Sony's eventual SE on blu (probably to coincide w/ the release of Silent Hill 2).

I agree. The teaser poster for SH is one of my favorite movie posters ever.

Pretty good movie. Lack of extras on any movie doesn't bother me ! Never watch 'em.

You should just be great-full you can buy it on Blu-ray.
It's not available for Region B yet(except for Germany), Universal owns the rights to Silent Hill in Australia(no Universal Blu-rays announced for release here yet )..

To confirm once again, the German release also features no content beyond the film. Not even a trailer.

The German has one of my favorite HiDef transfers. The detail is amazing.

The current domestic BD of Silent Hill is just okay. It came out very early in the lifecycle of Blu-ray before I think Sony had a firm grasp of transferring and encoding a great disc. I know the HD DVD version looked superior to it going off reports. I bet this title would look incredible if it was released again with the current state of knowledge, though of course this is a very unlikely title to get a double dip.

It still looks pretty good and has very dynamic SQ. I would double dip on this if later released with a few up-grades. Great Creepy Film!

I've been wanting to pick up Silent Hill on BD - has anyone heard if this will be re-released with a new encode/transfer? When is Slient Hill 2 coming?

Also, does the German release look that much better?

Bothers me. The dvd version should never have an advantage over the BD version. never.
