I apologize if this thread is already up, maybe someone could link it so i can see it...but i have been hesitant to buy older films on blu-ray such as Full Metal Jacket, The older Rambos, etc..you get the pont because I am afraid that they are unable to meet my needs of my HD expectations I have come to expect from POTC, Crank, I Am Legend, Casino Royale, etc. So if anyone out there has any input I might have to go out and get them, expecially if they are better than their DVD counterparts. I know that Ocean's 13 is pretty s****y on blu because the director wanted that old feeling and it is better quality on DVD.

2001 is my "reference" quality Blu-Ray..... with that being said... Full Metal Jacket, The Shining, A Clockwork orange, ALL look great... Kubrick was a master at lighting etc... and Blu Ray is the best way to showcase his work.
I haven't seen the Rambo movies yet, so I can't comment... but Close Encounters, and Blade Runner are both EXCELLENT quality.... You notice the colors, definition etc. more... but obviously POTC uses special effects etc. that weren't available before.... personally I prefer things like "Planet Earth" to IRobot, or POTC, etc... when it comes to "wow" factor... because you can see cool effects that look good, and say "wow that looks good" but you see a crocodile (not colorful etc) and see details on it you never see, and it's "WOW that thing looks like it's in the room with me" !!! PQ from the 70's and 80's can equal that of today.... Film is still higher definition that your home-theater, so if a film is preserved properly, and the transfer is good.... Old films can look like they are new releases...... (Basically rent a couple of the titles I mentioned.... it's more fun to see how good films you have seen multiple times can really look!!! ) |

Other somewhat "older" movies that I think have great PQ are The Rock and Crimson Tide.

If your worried about older movies meeting BD expectations as far as video quality, 1 movie, which is at least 50yrs old will change your mind. Try John Wayne's "The Searchers". Unbelievable!!!

Not all 35mm movies are done equally. Some were filmed then digitized then edited and transferred back to a 35mm master (this is not the best way), those movies will have the generational loss, and a Blu Ray master will be transferred off that master. Spielberg always does it properly, and for online editing, it's always done by cutting the 35mm raw footage, and edited by laying it out in order (no generational loss) The HD master will be digitized straight off that, and would look sensational.

Oddly enough, some older titles look better than recent titles. The Searchers, Bonnie & Clyde, are good examples of films looking great; while recent films like XXX, Hitch, House of Flying Daggers could definately be improved PQ wise.

I haven't come across a single BD that didn't please me in terms of being better than the DVD, they are all pretty much better than their DVD counterparts, we shouldn't be so concerned that it looks like Crank but that it's coming closer to what it originally looked like on Film.
