I've had my player for six months with just a minor freeze here and there. Did a firmware upgrade about 3 months ago. Halfway through watching a film, the player freezes up again. After a re-boot however, it now will not recognize ANY disc whatsoever. No matter what I put in--DVD or Blu Ray, the "No Disc" display appears.
Anyone else have this problem? |

Unplug it and press the power button to help drain the residual electricity. Plug it back in.
I forget if it has a reset button, but look for it under the front panel. Perhaps the back, maybe even the bottom. You have nothing to loose in trying either or both of those things.

It's both---I tried calling Sony and it did need a firmware upgrade, so I downloaded the files and burned them but the player didn't read THAT disc either. I can understand the firmware affecting newer discs, but every single disc sounds like it's something a little more complicated. Plus it died after a freeze--meaning the disc it crapped out on was playing okay to begin with.
I had Sony send me their own firmware disc so I'll see what happens when that arrives. I unplugged it a few times but I'll try the power drain as well. |

Your disc drive drive is most likely fine.
I have a BDP-S300 and after using about a year encountered this problem. I ejected the tray and sprayed air-duster all the way inside the unit (from the tray opening) and the problem went away. |

I'm sorry to say that my S300 has bit the dust.
Has anyone attempted to replace the drive itself? It is an older IDE interface drive and I'm not having any luck finding a BD-ROM drive with an IDE interface. I tried an older Pioneer drive but got "DRIVE ERR". This is probably a project for another day. |

Called Sony, she told me where to ship it. Return paperwork said "replaced BD Drive". All is well.
