Default Sound projection effects

Anyone remember how before the movie starts in the theater, sometimes they'll give that little bit where they shoot all the sound effects all over the theater and say, "don't add your own soundtrack to the movie please." I noticed that they made it seem like the sounds are coming from inside the theater, like I could have swore the baby was a few seats ahead of me. Any ideas how this is achieved, and if it's possible for home theater?

Not sure why you care, but it's just surround sound. What gear are you running? You can replicate it with a 5.1 or 7.1

I know the effect you're talking about... my only guess would be enough speakers and modifying the phasing/delay of the audio. Generally it's not really a desire effect in movies unless it's 3d, otherwise the audio doesn't sound like it's coming from the right spot.

You can make things sound like they are in different spots relative to their actual output depending on the phase delays -- it's rather bizarre really. (play with the "speaker distance" thing in your receiver if you're curious -- change a speaker by 5-10 feet in the receiver and you should be able to hear a rather strange effect, if I'm not mistaken)

Have a 7.1 system, I will research this phase delay some. Just curious and wanna hear it for myself.
