Default Metropolis - Fritz Lang extended version on Blu-ray in November 2010

Metropolis Blu-ray preorder

Metropolis Blu-ray Review

Mod note: See blu-ray.news & this post for latest developments

I've just confirmed directly from Kino that a Blu-ray release of Fritz Lang's epic silent film "Metropolis" will be released on Blu-ray in 2009. Below is the email response I received from Kino.

This is exciting news as there probably isn't a more recognized silent or science fiction film than "Metropolis". I'll preorder this as soon as it's an option!

Original Email:

Quote:
Yes, there is a Metropolis Blu-ray release slated for release, but it probably won’t be until 2009.

Michael

That is very cool. I have never seen it, but for those that don't know, the movie Dark City was largely based off of this film.

Holy crap! That's great news!

Though, the cynic in me says that its more likely than not going to be 2010, knowing Kino!

I have this film on DVD. It came in a 50 DVD pack of classic horror films. There are like 45 crap films and a few classics (Carnival of Souls, Night of the Living Dead, Little Shop of Horrors, Nosferatu, and Metropolis). For $15 it was worth it.

UFA!

I wonder if Forry has a Blu-ray player

I have a great looking PAL version but would buy it immediately again on Blu-ray

I just hope Kino blesses us with a great transfer... Kino's transfer quality can be quite questionable at times

I'm very pleased with their dvd release. I know that they did a 2k digital transfer at the time. I can only assume that they are using this same digital master for the Blu-ray release. Since it's already done, maybe they'll actually make good and get it out in early 2009. That'd be great!

Very good news.... I wonder, though -- what will actually wind up being the first silent film release on Blu-Ray?

The Lost World was one of the first DVDs I bought back in 1997.

Stop the Replacing of original Studio Opening / Closing logos! These are becoming endangered and should be kept intact. They are part of film history.

I can't be the only one who's since become disillusioned to find the original slow-paced and comically workers-unite preachy, after the cool Broadway-musical fantasia of the '84 Giorgio Moroder version....

Apparently, I'm just ahead of the big announcement. It's official! That's an odd coincident.

Wow. That is just...WOW!!! This bit of Blu-Ray news excites me more than any of the other titles announced this week. When they're taking the time to remaster and release an 81 year old movie on Blu-Ray, and ones whose original cut has been lost to the sands of time (the DVD explains the torturous history this film has had over the years), then that means the format has officially arrived.

As I said in another thread, how long does it take to restore 25 minutes? The last quarter of 2009 is almost upon us and no release date yet.

Very nice.
I can't wait to get this one. This has always been a favorite of mine.

But I have to wonder how many threads we'll have after this is released by mo-mo's that are going to complain about the aspect ratio and lack of DTS-MA
