I've wondered if there are any plans on making a Blu-ray portable. If so when.

I don't expect to see portable/in car BD tech for years. It took them almost 5-8 years before portable/in car DVD players became affordable.

Is it me or does it seem a bit of a waste to have a format featuring HD picture 1080p and HD audio limited to a 6" LCD screen (which will probably never feature or benefit from 1080p) and tiny portable device speakers?

My car player has the option for "dolby digital" decoder..... but I don't see the point of that inside a vehicle, let-alone HD-MA !!! |

Well you would never want to market Blu-ray for portable players. But when Blu comes mainstream people will want to be able to watch their Blu-rays on-the-go...or in their cars....or while on an airplane. Just like people do now. And you wouldn't need a 1080p display. People wouldn't expect full HD quality on a small portable screen. But I know I sure as heck wouldn't want to double dip a movie just so that I can watch it on a portable player every once in a while.

A nice solution would be to extend digital copy to in-dash media center pc's so that we can have access to all our movies at the touch of a button without having to bring along the disc. I would find this more useful than the portable video player application currently being utilized. |

Once BD is more mainstream, you will see the players. Look at DVD, it wasnt until a few years later, and even then, they were overpriced.

Yep, I doubt I would notice the nuances of 1080p on a 7" screen, but it would still look good, and bottom line is I want to watch the movie, which won't be possible with BD's until they show up as non-laptop portable devices. |

The concept of portable Blu-ray has a number of things against it, primarily:
01. media cost, not many people are going to risk a $30 disc "on the go" ,especially for children's viewing. They are notorious for their ability to turn "media disc" into "scratched frisbee". 02. Short of the millionaire jet-set, the need for HD video or audio will not be realised in vehicles for some time to come. 03. Digital copy (or Managed Copy if the industry pulls a Lazarus) will likely be the preferred "on the go" format. Content streaming may also become more viable for on-the-go applications. I do honestly believe the days of portable hard media storage are numbered. While I do understand that certain members might desire to play their Blu-ray titles in the car or on an airplane, the market for such devices will likely remain so minimal that it will be years before a mainstream market develops, if ever.
But in my own way, I am King. Hail to the King, baby.

If the screen is too small, it's doubtful you can see a big difference. OTOH, I have seen BD output on small OLED screens up close, and I'll have to say it looks very different from the best DVD on the best LCD at that size of screen.
If OLED screen for cars are available, I'd say, the BD player will be almost free (seeing that OLED screen is priced the same as a used economy car). I wouldn't be surprised if someone productized such a beast for the ultra high end luxury cars, but the price will be astronomical. |

My friends' kids climb into my vehicle and look for the TV and if bold enough to ask they get handed a book. What's more amazing is the parents are more shocked than the kids. What kid doesn't dig a Dr. Seuss or a nice coloring book. Jeez, is the trip to Starbucks so long?
